Hi, I am considering to buy my "first" headphones (not ear plugs), which I want to use also for mixing. I have to say, that I do not have anything special. Just: M-audio FastTrack Pro, SM MC01 mic and M-audio AV 40 monitors.

I do not want to buy something expensive, because of my budget, but I would like to buy something sufficient.
Can you suggest something? I was looking on audio-technica ATH- TAD300. Do you have any experiences with this model?
Thank you

Sennheiser 280 & 580 come highly recommended. Pick what fits your budget. $90 for the 280s or $170 for the 580s. (Both prices from Amazon.

I use Shure SRH840s, which run around $200.

BUT . . .

You really shouldn't mix with phones. I used to use only phones and could never understand why I couldn't get vocals to balance with the music. Then I bought a pair of KRK Rokit8 near field monitors -- it made a world of a difference. As I learned here on homerecording (thanks, guys!), when you mix with monitors, you hear music from each speaker slightly delayed in the opposite ear, which helps the brain interpret spatial placement of sound. Once I started mixing with the monitors, I had no trouble with balancing vocals, and got better, more textured stereo mixes. Interestingly, these mixes sounded better on the headphones, too.

So, get phones if you must, but the conventional wisdom is that you'll get a much better mix from monitors.

Google JVC HA-RX700. You'll find none better at that price point.
