Sub Woofer...maybe...?

For the past 3 years or so I've been mixing through Behringer B2031A's... Seems that my bass is always too hot when playing through other systems... I try to cut the bass in my mixes to compensate for the lack of it in my monitors, but seem to have a hard time getting it right consistently...

I've thought of buying new monitors, maybe the Warfdales or the M-Audio BX8A's... Just curious if I'd still be running into the same problem with different monitors, I know a lot of people don't like the B2031's... Or, should I also get a sub woofer with the new monitors?

Thanks in advance,

Have you already considered what the room is doing to your bass? Very possible that it might be the bigger problem.

Actually, I've not... I've mixed in 3 different rooms since I've had these monitors and have always had the same problem... One of the monitors has started 'going to sleep' while I'm mixing... I just thought I'd buy a newer, maybe better set...

BTW, metalhead28, what happened to your pic that used to be below your name... The First Baptist Church sign...? I laughed everytime I saw it! :D

Ok, thanks Metalhead28...

Now, about room treatment... I've read about room treatment and always end up being confused... Knowing my problem, and I'll state it again:

When mixing, I add bass to my mix to the point it sounds good on my monitors, but when I play it on another system, even car audio, it's way too bassy...

I've thought of building some bass traps out of the 2X4's and insulation... In your opinion would these types of traps help with the problem I'm having...?

I know several people around here know alot more about this than I do, but I would say absolutely. Adding bass traps will really help you to hear what is happening in the low end. Do you ever try moving around the room and end up hearing the bass get louder in certain spots and quieter in some? Perfect situation for demonstrating the need for bass traps.

I would say monitors with 8" woofers would be fine without a sub, as long as the room was not working against you.

Good deal... That's what I needed to know... I was planning to build the bass traps anyways... and I need new monitors... So maybe it'll work out without me having to buy a sub too... We'll see... I'm about 99% sure I'm going with the M-Audio BX8A's over the Wharfdales though... More because of the woofer size than anything...

non-pro here, but 8" should be fine for getting the lowend i would think.
i can't understand it. KRK RP8's were going for $300 at GC during Holidays too.

Have you ever done a rta read. free software pink noise program with a crap pc, low memory and slow Mhz is fine. a cheap measurement mic.
It may show something in your room. Bass can cancel as well as add.

BTW, I've heard really well done mixes on the 2031a's.

I went to GC and had a look a the RP8's... The thing that turned me off on them was what the GC rep told me... I'm not sure if this is true or not, but this is what he said and I left without buying them:

He said that the tweeter horn on the RP8's was just there for looks... It didn't make any sound that all the sound came through the woofer...

Like I said, I'm not sure if this is true or not, but this is what he said and I left without buying them. If someone knows if this is the truth, please let me know...

Thanks in advance,

Well, I can't say anything with absolute confidence since I don't have a pair sitting here in front of me, but I'd say that the GC rep is a stupid ass. I know that's hard to believe about a GC rep, but... :D An 8" woofer with no tweeter would sound pretty pathetic, nobody would get away with something like that.

Yeah, well, I took it very lightly... They didn't have a set hooked up for me to hear, and I didn't ask them to hook a set up either... He was saying that only the "V8" series actually had a horn that worked... Sounds like he wanted to see me the "V8" series... What happened though, he didn't sell me anything... He said the RP8's didn't even have a cross-over in them...

Yeah, I understand your concerns. GC people are all dumb shits in my experiences. My suggestion is in the future, when a jerk-off at GC tells you something that sounds silly... look at them like they just asked you to massage their scrotum....don't let up....just keep looking at them that way. Then look to the side slightly and shake your head just a little while inhaling deeply. Then pretend to regain your composure and look at them again to see if they crack. Sometimes they will cave in and admit that they really don't know what the fuck they are talking about. Sometimes they will just get nervous. Either way it's alot of fun!
Whenever I go into a Guitar Center I act like I don't know shit, and then when some jack-ass takes the bait I serve em up a big plate of "How does your foot taste, you limp shaft?" That's big fun for me. Of course I can also be a real asshole. Go figure!

Of course you've gotta research what you plan to buy pretty heavily before you go to GC so you don't have to listen to their shit to figure out if something is really what you want. Otherwise, it's harder to make them look like jack-asses.

good way to put things metalhead28. some GC employees are just trying to sell you ANYTHING. well, that's what it's like at almost any store. but yea, they once told me the M-Audio BX5's sounded like shit, go figure. i ended up walking away with Rokit 5's. they're my beautiful babies. next up is kRK's subwoofer. :)

At risk of this thread falling into total chaos... Went into GC to get a headphone extension cord. GC guy takes me to the rack on the wall. $59 dollars for a 10ft, gold connecter, super wire, headphone extension. I ask the guy if he has something else. He says no. So, I say thanks, walk over to the other wall and grab a $11 dollar, 10ft, standard quality headphone extension. I already knew exactly where it was. ;) I take the cable to another register, so that GC guy doesn't get credit for the sale.

agree GC does seem to be a little higher pressure than it used to be imo??
The KRK thing is way off tho. Thats just sad,sad bs.....geez.

Zetajazz44, reading this thread again...you've had the 2031a's 3 years. Thats quite awhile and with one "falling asleep"..sounds like a different brand might work for you.

Just my opinion, which isn't worth a $10 cable.
but I thought some speakers perform better at different types of music.
I know, I know, their all supposed to be flat per the spec....but each brand sure sounds a little different to me. :D

and yeah...a Subwoofer and some 5" is a nice setup. Like 3-ways.

Yeah, I think so too... To be honest though, I've not had a speck of trouble out of these Behringer's (I am allowed to say that here?) :D ... They've served me well... I knew when I bought them that they weren't the best out there, but they were in my budget and I was in need of monitors...

I'm gonna rethink the RP8's as well as look/listen to the M-Audio BX8a's... Both of those are within my budget this time around... I sort of had my heart set on the Wharfdales, but I just can't bring myself to getting the smaller cones... What do you think about these 3 that I've mentioned...?
