That's the list right there! Go from there. Everyone needs to worry about the other features later, when you get to them. It's only an idea and already the feature creep is setting in.

I would go with being able to customize those types of lists. It's not that hard to implement and adds a lot to the functionality.

What is going to be the number one end all-purpose of the application? Just looking for a big picture. The contact management side of things has been done to death but the ability to input and organize track sheets, contacts and time/billing tracking would be very useful. I have had this aching in the back of my mind wishing for a software track sheet. The ability to keep all of this in one place would be excellent. That being said lets not forget that most of us will be running system intensive recording applications while running this studio/recording organizational software. Features are great but will they come at a price?

@charger: I do agree somewhat, but when you start developing such a program, there are functionalities that you must take care of in the data-model BEFORE building the application on top of it. HangDawg knows what I'm talking about

@HangDawg: while I was formulating the idea I already felt it to be the way to go. Indeed not hard to implement and I think I can keep it quite simple to use.

@Fret: I'm intended to implement as much functionality as you guys all ask for (as long as it's usefull). Tracksheets are already on the table
As for running this application on the same machine as your recording apps, there will be no problem. The development system that I use delivers clean applications running from one directory, nothing is put into the registry or windows directories. The memory-footprint will be between 5-10 Mb tipical and there is only disk-access when you are actually working in the program (viewing, editing, adding data).

First version available by saturday I think

I bought Tracknotes (www.virtualstudiosystems.com) which I have not used yet (still building the studio).

I have seen that one. It's a tracksheet program, not for keeping iformation on booking and invoicing. I also think that it is very complex for the task at hand. To my opinion this kind of software should not get in the way of the actual recording process and inputting al this information (when I look at that website) is a task on it's own.

However, there might be some usefull tricks in there that we can "borrow" for our own development

i like track record also for a name. sorry i cant be of much more help with this as i would be the only person using the program. there would be only the one place/room to record in and 1 hard drive being recorded to.
so for me, just track sheet, invoice billing, client info, address where recording if taking place and time used info would be all i would need pretty much.

how about a page that contains all of the info on your studio equipment/serial numbers etc. i think that would be a helpful item for me since i take my equip on the road alot. hows that for an idea?

Got that one covered already . It should be possible to add specific equipment to your project rent-sheet. So you can input all your equipment, link specific equipment to a facility (so in your case the facility is the portable rig) and you can add additional equipment that is not default rented with a session but can be rented in addition to the default rig. The program keeps track of things so your invoice shows the facility rent and additional cost for other equipment.

Seems usefull to me that way, what do you think ?

i came up with a new idea. but maybe your not up to this point in the program yet.
a per track/instrument section to jot down all the sessions settings for compressions/reverbs/delays etc. things like that. but i know im way behind here and you already had this covered.
big problems in sonar with this. it remembers which effect, but doesnt tell you the name of the preset you were using.

Actually, I thought about this today I'm thinking about a system where you can link equipment from the database to a track(sheet) and input the settings. Also to couple this with preset management for each unit so you can choose a preset and have the settings for that copied to the tracksheet, and also to the option have new settings from the track-sheet migrated to the preset system for later use.
Still there's a lot to think about. Like do we wan't to have the option to divide sessions up into takes, or can we stay with a tracks-per-session model (simpler).

By the way, I'm currently building the database and application framework, so don't expect a more or less finished program. I'll be happy if we can input person-information tonight

After that, I think first the facilities and equipment management in one or two days.
