I know this is an old thread, but I just read it and looked at the photo Alan put up. I gotta say the unit really is "butt-ugly"...That's sort of how this thread started, right?

So, you really have to be careful about who you really trust when it comes to there recommendations. There's alot of knowledge on this site but weed through the "trust me buy this and you'll be happy" posts.I've come to trust certain individuals around here that I know have the knowledge and have tried these products out first hand ....

Yeah, I think you can get meaningful info here, as long as when you ask about a product say, "Has anyone specifically used X? If so, what do you think of it, and how does it compare to Y, if you've used both?" Or something like that. When basing questions like this, I get answers I feel I can trust.

I don't think anyone means any harm ... sometimes people just like to get in a discussion about stuff and unless you specify you want concrete experience, a thread you start could turn into a discussion of speculations.

It is a half rack unit, and the box is really a silver color. That photo makes it look a little purplish, but it is Silver and Black...just like the Raiders.

I could tell by that that I will not market well in KC, perhaps a red and gold edition with arrowhead shaped holes in front will go over better here in Raider Hater country.

I am interested in the Malcom Toft Design pre that is coming soon, Isnt he the genius behind trident boards and other designs that helped shape the sounds of modern music? I also will like to hear about the SP with SP (Stephen Paul) mic line, you have going.

Will there be some kind of rack converter for the VTB-1? thats the only thing I would change in that design, seeing how my big pet peave is equiment that wont fit in a rack, or takes up only half a space and makes your rack look like an oklahoma rednecks smile.

There are a few pieces of gear out there that have combined an incredible sexiness of design with high end audio specs - stuff like the Focusrite Red series, the DBX Blue series... I'm sure we all have our favorites. Of all the gear I own, probably only the Millenia TCL-2 would probably be voted great looking. Yeah, it's nice to look good, but on a scale of 1-10 for most important features considered when buying gear, looks would probably be #11 for most of us primarily concerned with sound, build quality, ease of use, and other features.

If I WERE to base my decisions on looks, I'd have a whole rack of Behringer tube stuff (with those cute little retro VU meters). But I don't.

Besides, I don't see anything wrong with the "looks" of Alan's preamp. While it may not be a design "knockout", to my subjective eyes it is no uglier than anything I currently own by Cranesong, Tubetech, API, Vintech, TC Electronics, Eventide, Lexicon, etc.

What DOES piss me off is self-appointed critics who use demeaning adjectives and then can't even spell them correctly. The word is "CHINTZY" (not "chinsy") which is derived from a fabric called "chintz". Unless it was a misspelling of "Chinese-y" which in this case would be an accurate geographical description of the manufacturing location, but wouldn't make a lot of sense otherwise in the context of the post.

You'd think people around here would be glad someone was making an honest attempt to produce quality sounding gear at bargain prices. First we had the "spam police". Now I guess we have the "chinsy" police. (Overweight officers with double-chins?)

darrin,

Yes, Malcolm Toft was behind the Trident Consoles, and his products are very cool. I expect 60 to 90 days before we are shipping them.

There is no plans for a rack kit for the VTB1 just yet. We want to get the unit to market and see if the need for them really exists.

It definately has that...Wow whats all those knobs for thing going for it..

Nope. This one's got any of 'em beat. :D If AES had an award for coolest-looking new gear of 2002, this would be your leading candidate:

Now, that's what I'm talkin' about!

And it looks like I revived a dead thread with my insult (all in good fun, of course). But, Alan, you mean the thing's still not shipping yet? I know ya gotta be tired of hearin' that, but, damn... There are a bunch of us with money burnin' holes in our pockets. Ya gotta hate that.

VTB-1's have been shipping for a few days now, so they are now out there... Butt ugly or not, the VTB-1 is very good at $179.99

ok, they are shipping...the big question is : Does Harvey Gerst have 1 to review?....

Gidge,

If Harvey want's to do a review, he is welcome to do so. I sent him mics several weeks ago including the new B Series, so I think many of you are still waiting the outcome of that.

Quite frankly, so am I... I am sitting on pins and needles more that you guys are, but if Harvey wants to step up, all he has to do is say the word.

if he wont review it, i'd be more than happy to. do you need my shipping address? :D

Yeah, even tho I was hoping to get out of the reviewing business soon, I'll listen to the damn thing. Keep in mind Alan, I'll be getting one of the pre-production RNMPs to test about the same time, so both "reviews" will be hitting about the same time. I see the VT1 targeted at a slightly different market and different price range, so I don't see much conflict, and it's a very different design philosophy than the RNMP.

Here's the schedule (kinda) when I'm not actually recording somebody:

1. Review all the Studio Project mics.

2. Review Zekeman's C3000B

3. Review new battery powered MXL 1006P

4. Review RNMP and VT1.

Sounds like you could use a vacation Harvey, Email me for my shipping address and take a load off.

The VTB-1 is much different than the RNMP, and quite a bit less money, but the quality is quite good and I think you will be very surprised by it.
