There are a few pieces of gear out there that have combined an incredible sexiness of design with high end audio specs - stuff like the Focusrite Red series, the DBX Blue series... I'm sure we all have our favorites. Of all the gear I own, probably only the Millenia TCL-2 would probably be voted great looking. Yeah, it's nice to look good, but on a scale of 1-10 for most important features considered when buying gear, looks would probably be #11 for most of us primarily concerned with sound, build quality, ease of use, and other features.
If I WERE to base my decisions on looks, I'd have a whole rack of Behringer tube stuff (with those cute little retro VU meters). But I don't.
Besides, I don't see anything wrong with the "looks" of Alan's preamp. While it may not be a design "knockout", to my subjective eyes it is no uglier than anything I currently own by Cranesong, Tubetech, API, Vintech, TC Electronics, Eventide, Lexicon, etc.
What DOES piss me off is self-appointed critics who use demeaning adjectives and then can't even spell them correctly. The word is "CHINTZY" (not "chinsy") which is derived from a fabric called "chintz". Unless it was a misspelling of "Chinese-y" which in this case would be an accurate geographical description of the manufacturing location, but wouldn't make a lot of sense otherwise in the context of the post.
You'd think people around here would be glad someone was making an honest attempt to produce quality sounding gear at bargain prices. First we had the "spam police". Now I guess we have the "chinsy" police. (Overweight officers with double-chins?)
