studio projects t3 vs the neumann tlm103

I'm glad you chimed in, Alan. I was starting to wonder where you were at. Better run for cover before gidge gets here;) I checked soundpure out, couldn't find the studio projects line. $579 is very tempting for the T3...I can see I'll agonize over this for many weeks to come.
My main fear is that I won't find a great tube mic under 600$ or even $1500. So much new gear is being hyped anymore as being the best thing next to...well you know. But in the end it most was just that, hype. You can understand where I'm coming from? 5 years ago you couldnt get any decent condenser under $1000 and now five years later we're selling tube mics for under $600? How am I supposed to believe it is on the same level as tube mics which are 2k or more? I just don't want to get screwed again as I did when I bought Rodent. Will the T3 still be a viable mic 20 years from now or will it go the way of the rode nt1?
Sorry for giving your mic line grief, Alan. I just want ya to understand where I'm coming from. And if the T3 really does beat out the tlm-103 well, then I'd be foolish to not buy it.

Thanks for the reply, Guardian. The neumanns sounded pretty damn good on that track. Nice room acoustical treatment;)

I understand your concerns, in fact, thats what everyone said about Volkswagon in 1949, but they are still here, and if I could predict the future, then I could assure you that Studio Projects will still be here. Since I can't, I can only tell you what I know, and what I think, both as an engineer, and a manufacturer.

Doug Oberkercher, Grammy Winner uses the T3. He is Sting's vocal engineer. Jason Miles, Grammy winner for Weather Report uses the T3, Take Six, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Frank Scarpelli, Tina Turner, and the list goes on and on.

What you want is a good mic. A good "Tube" mic. The T3 is a great Tube mic, and will last you countless years. Will it be worth anything after 20 years...Does it matter? If you only get five years of using a great tube mic for $579.00, then count your blessings. The only issue here is what does the mic sound like. It is obviously good enough for several Grammy Winners!!

Todd at Sound Pure is a very high end mic dealer. Call him at 919-682-5552. Ask him what happend with the mic shootout they did in a high profile recording studio. They had every high end mic you could possibly think of in one studio. If I comment, then I get accused of Spamming. I suppose I will get hammered for this because I am promoting, but to me, I am only answering your question. Yet, I am sure I will drive someone crazy out there, and he knows who he is...not you Gidge :D

In either case, let them cringe. If you can find a better Tube mic for $1,500.00, buy it, I don't think you can. The T3 holds it's own next to some very impressive mics. I don't say it's better, but I say it holds it's own.

Call Todd let him tell you. I am sure he would love to sell you a Brauner, Neumann, Manley, Soundeluxe and others he carries, but ask him what happened at the shootout. Then ask him if you can work something out to try the mic.

Call Todd now!

Thanks Alan, I'l give it a try. Do you any particular tracks of commercial releases that used the T3. Are there any songs of Sting that I can hear the T3 in action?

Sorry, but I do not have that information. Doug bought his mic in December of 01, so everything he has done for all the artisits he has recorded since, the T3 has seen a good deal of action. Believe me, this is not the only mic Doug uses. There was an article in the Mix, sometime in October about high profile vocal engineers, and Doug was interviewed. He went out of his way to mention the T3, and that was well before he even bought one. He had used one on a session with Jason Miles, and fell in love with it.

Jason Miles is found on the Paris newsgroups, so maybe he can give you insight of what tracks Doug has used them on.

Why would anyone accuse you of spamming if you aren't spamming? The dissemination of information is not spamming AFAIK.

Even this isn't spam, what the hell are you talking about? If you are trying to bait me Alan, I know you can do better than that.

broke sucks

I'd love to hear this guy I'm working with's voice through a great tube mic..but when I can barely afford to take my cat to the vet, well..maybe AFTER this project I'll have spare money to pickup a T3 or something else and add my first tube mic to the cabinet.
Can anyone describe the sound/color that would be contributed by a tube mic on a vocalist such as the one in the MP3 above? He's got a very breathy/resonant voice and in my opinion, is going places with the right music.

Alan, T3 VS TB1...

Alan,

Could you please give me (and others) an opinion on how the sound differs between the T3 and your soon to be available TB1? Just some objective differences would be nice to know. Do they sound radically different? For about half the price, the TB1 sounds like a great deal, and as long as it's not half as good, then I'd really consider this as my first tube mic purchase.

I know you can explain the differences without fear of spamming...Just the facts jack! ;)

Wow, not that easy. In cardioid they are close, but the TB1 is a little more neutral, while the T3 has more presence. They are both very airy, and silky, but the T3 is, well...the T3. The added patterns really allow you to be more flexible by opening or closing the pattern so you can edge out low frequency rumble, or smooth out the top end. Not to mention the ability to use Omni and Figure of Eight.

So, yes, they are very close, which is why we had to reduce the T3's price. I hope that helps... :D

Who needs a tube mic?!

Just use a "tube" plug in! Geez!!! Save some dough!

Yeah, right. :D

Your right Chris..better yet, I dont even need the plugin. I just remembered I already have a perfect tube mic stand. That should give me all the tubeness I need.

Thanks for the help!

:p
