Studio Projects Sucks!

right, a real pro would be too busy to hang out here anyway, especially with the tim ehe's spent on it, I'm sure if we look at his posts they happen when he should be working, which means he doesn't.

maybe I'm wrong about the time thing.....holy crap did I just make a snap judgment on something I not reserched at all, dang, I must be stupid.

talk about tripe, recordingpro, did you remember where your posting? HOMErecording.com. very few us us are pros, very few, those "cheap chinese sh-t" your talking about are great for home guys who for the most part are not making pro recordings for people, some are, but they are good enough to make them sound good. I don't listen when I hear "this mic sounds like a mic 3X-10X it's price, I'm using it more often than my Neumans....dorf....dorf". Whatever, but they are good for US. If this wasn't the case this website would be called prorecording.com. Or as you said it before, gearsluts.com, so just go hang out there if you are such a purist prick that you can't look at anything that has a cheap price on it. For guys like me, it sounds ok, it does the job better than others in that price range, and until this place changes it's name to something with the word pro in it, it deserves a place here, unlike you.
This guy wouldn't last a second on Gearslutz because after about twenty posts of irrelevant shite Jules would just ban him. In fact, he's probably been a member there before already and has found out that this is an unmoderated forum where he can have fun for longer!

Hey, Harvey, is that mp3 posted anywhere I can hear it? And do you remember the technique you used on the upright? As both an upright owner and an ECM8000 owner I would be greatly interested in hearing it.
I put it up on my website:

Not the world's greatest bluegrass band, but they did ok on this song.

I had the ECM8000 pointed down towards the floor, about a foot out from the bass, with the tip of the mic about even with the neck/body joint. It started out as a talkback mic (since I was close miking everything else to reduce bleed), but the bass sounded so good on the ECM8000, I decided to track with it.

Okay, since recordingpro(stitute) isn't going to post anything to substantiate his 'opinion', why don't the legions of SP owners post links to THEIR work, so the world can hear once and for all whether Studio Projects sucks or not?

Better yet, anyone with both SP gear and something that recordingpro wouldn't think is vacuum inducing post side by side clips (without mentioning which is which), so we can all impartially nominate which one sucks more than the other.

I would do this, except that the C1 is the BEST mic I can get my hands on at the moment (by virtue of me being a HOME recording person - hopefully I never make it to pro level if recordingpro's example is anything to go by).

I just listened to that clip. That should be a lesson to some people of what happens when you put a tool in the hands of a master !

Well, we own a SP T3 that Spoonfed Tribe is currently using for most of the vocals on their new double album. I'll see if I can get Alex to run off a quick mix of part of one of the songs. If they have no objections, I'll post it here.

now this is what I call turning crap into good stuff, not the bad mic in-good music out. I mean a horrible post by an idiot turned into a good discussion with feedback worth reading......how ironic.........yeehaww

The OH in the two songs linked are mxl 603s, but I frequently use the SPB1 for a bigger sound - either will do a great job. RNP for OH, Joemeek twinQ for the kick/snare, MOTU stock pres for the toms. SM57s and an AKG D112 round out the dynamics. MXL V67 on vocals - beats out the NT1A which is used only very seldomly. For a Dying Bird has acoustic guitars which were a pair of SP B1s into an RNP/RNC.

Anything can suck for a particular purpose compared to something else suited for a different purpose. A Manley gold reference mic would be an absurdly inappropriate bit of gear for me to own. A pair of SP B1s is a fuckin' no brainer.

Just to give you some extremes, here's a recording I did at the San Francisco AES show to show off Brauner's new mic. This was recorded directly into an HHB CD recorder - no eq, no effects. Of course, having my friend Rick Ruskin playing guitar didn't hurt non either. Straight recording, no punch-ins, no overdubs.

Last offering is an end of the recording session "jam", featuring the legendary Barbara Dane. Had her sitting next to me at the console singing into an MXL V77. Sax was into a Shure SM7, set up as a talkback mic. Bass and keyboards going direct. Some effects, but not much (if any) eq.

BTW, she just celebrated her 75th birthday last year. This was recorded when she was 71 or 72.

Yo Mr. Pro,

I used the SP C4s to record the acoustic guitars and mando parts on this here cover tune of Seals & Crofts . Mind you that I varied up on which preamps I used, such as DMP-3, Art, and Sytek.

Please tell me what sucks about it. After all, I just record as a hobby. I’m not a pro.

I also used an SM57, Senn E385, and a CAD e100 here and there.

See ‘ya at the Grammies.

High On A Mountain

Seriously,

Tell me what's good or what is bad about it.

I gave you something to listen to and critique.

Your turn.......

Harvey, those tracks sound great! I think I'm learning more and more, the importance of having a good sounding room can not be understated. Also great musicians and great sounding instruments/voices is always going to be the most important part.

I own a VTB-1 and my experience has been that it hasn't worked super well for my purposes yet - but that's not to say it's not good for anything because I haven't used it on a recording in a decent room or for many different things. Without having a lot of experience with different pre's I would say different mic's do tend to sound different through it. The same can't be said for my other cheap pre's. That high on a mountain sounds pretty cool too - although I'm listening on headphones. I like in the begginig when the guitar starts out in the cent and then spreads out right before the vocals start.

Harvey,

Just listened to "Pallet".

Simply wonderful!

Hopefully, my voice will improve with age (probably not  :( )

Thanks for posting that clip. It made my night. :)

Keep in mind that those tracks were recorded in what used to be a small 11' by 11' bedroom, in an old mobile home (with a 7' ceiling).

I used office cubicle dividers (rescued from an office building dumpster) hung on the walls to provide some absorption. The carpeting on the front wall and the doors was also rescued from some hotel dumpsters.

This thread starts "studio projects sucks!"...
and we are hearing good recordings with SP C4s and anothers "not expensive" mics like MXL 603, V77, Behringer ECM 8000,and these mics DON´T "SUCKS".
Ok, some cheap mics probably will "sucks" in many ways, but an expensive one can "sucks" too, with bad musicians , untuned string instruments  !,poor performance, bad engineering  , untreated rooms,...

Congratulations, Harvey and 60´s guy!

OK, I just got permission from Spoonfed Tribe to post a track here from their new unreleased album. It's the only track that's completely finished so far; it's gonna be a double album.

The vocals were all done with the Studio Projects T3 mic. Alex said the drums were recorded with our MXL's.

Usually, Alex uses the oktava MC012 with the LOMO 33mm head on guitars, but I think he said he used the T3 on some of the guitars too. He left for the night, so I'll hafta get the details on the guitar mic setup tomorrow, when he comes back in.
