Studio Projects C4

I've been waiting and wondering. They're out (finally), but I haven't heard a word about them. Nada, zip, nill!!! None of the buzz or marketing hype that came out for the B1 or C1. So, all you hold outs, anyone experienced these mics? Anyone heard them? Anyone heard anything that makes you not want to buy them. How about anything that makes you just have to have them?

I have about two more purchases for the year before the great budget hammer comes down: I'm looking for a really good, warm, full vocal mic for my thin upper baritone/low tenor voice; and some new options for overhead with the possibility of close micing acoustic guitars and maybe snare, toms or hats.

For overhead's, I currently use Octava mc012's. They are a fine mic, but lose definition and control with proximity. It takes a lot of work with positioning and eq to get the tone I want when I close mic with them. So, I'm looking for another small diameter mic that I can afford that is better at close micing. Will the c4 fit the bill? Anybody. Is there anybody out there?
 
Well then, stop waiting and get some :D and please let everyone here know what you think about them.
 
Ahhh, so we're all sitting around waiting for one of us to bite the bullet and buy a pair. Couldn't somebody who'se richer than me go first?
 
I can say that after long work on the Mic's you wont be disapointed.
 
Well, I can say that about a lot of mic's... but, it doesn't mean it would hold true for everyones taste buds... someone might be disapointed. :D

I wanna know! I'm still impress by the price/quality of my C1. So I guess it will be the same with the C4. I'm planning to get some new overgaeds too, but only in october-november 2003. I actually use 2 MXL1006 as overheads.
 
The same thing happened with the B1 and 603s and alot of other gear. It takes time for people to decide what their next hundred dollar purchase will be :D at which point it takes a couple of months until they buy it and then spend enough time with it to make a call about it. Give it till July for the buzz to pick up.
As far as the C4 goes, small diaphragm condensers will never be as exciting as large diaphragms.
 
Hey Jarrod, tell us about all the long hard work. What were your goals with this mic and how well do you feel you met them. I love talking with people who are really invested in their own stuff. Its cool to see how the process of invention happens + far more interesting than the usual advertising hype. Anything you can share?

Actually, if Alan could see it to donate a pair for me to test, I'll gladly post a review!

Maybe there should be more distance between my two comments. People could get funny ideas.

No, don't loan them to Harvey, GIVE them to him to keep... Harvey's time is worth more than the mic's.

One more comment... I don't think Alan will be sending Harvey the C4's to review -- because Harvey still hasen't posted his review of the last mic's Alan sent him. However, I'm sure Harvey would post his Studio Projects mic review, if he could find his notes. But I might be wrong about Alan sending the C4's to Harvey for review... because after all, Harvey did review the SP VTB-1 and gave it a thumbs up. On the other hand... from what I understand, Harvey doesn't really like doing reviews... so he may not want to do it.

I'm just thinking out loud... and rambling on... lol. I need coffee.
 
Hey guys,

Well, the C4's are here, and for those who contributed to the thread on RO where we first asked about doing a SD mic...thank you.

I know Jarrod is excited with the mics, as are quite a few others. Will Harvey get a set. I am sure at some point he will. We have our first issue to deal with on the C4's and that are the shock mounts. We think they came in a little undersized and the mics are not as tight in them as they should be, but we are looking into this now.

As always, those who have experienced our service will know we will take care of business if the mounts need to be replaced. Anyway, go on out and buy them guys. They were designed by quite a few of you out there, so support your design and buy them...

By the way, Dot was in on the design as well. :D
 
So they have cardiod and omni capsuls? It would have me from having to buy some omni behringer ecm8000's, and i'd say the c4 is most likely a lot better than the behringers.

Might as well kill two birds with one stone.
 
Question for a Alenhyatt

I don't know if this has been covered but, How does the selector switch work? Can you use the hi-pass and the pad at the same time? The way they are all in one switch makes it look like it's one or the other....

Hey DOT, thanks for the review. Always valuable. Always appreciated.

What would help me even more is any comparison you could make with well-functioning Octava mc012's. I'm your typical cheap-ass, low end home recordist trying to get a million dollar sound for $1,000. The Octava's are my only good small diameter frame of reference. Any thoughts? Or, will you include the Octava in the Listening Sessions?
