what can you guys tell me about the new b3 mic?
what i want to know is what the difference between the b3 and the t3, and when it's coming out.
i have tried the search function, but my computer keeps crashing, and when i input 'studio projects b3' an error message comes up.
alternatively, can you guys point me to a thread where this has been discussed? i know it has been in the past, i just wasn't paying much attention at the time.

thanks,
adriano

i think you have to use words with at least 3 to 4 letters for the search to work.....Alan Hyatt will probably be around to answer all your questions and more......

im pretty sure its not out yet so Alan will probably be the only one to give you accurate info on it.......

thanks, gidge.
i'll try the search on another computer, and see if it helps.

The B3 is an old hammond organ and the T3 is a korg keyboard :p

Why cant these mofo's come up with some original model numbers?

They both use the same tube, which is a 6072 dual Triode. The capsule is different on the TB1, it uses thinner materials and is 3 micron thick, the T3 is 6 micron. The TB1 is a fixed cardioid pattern, the T3 is a three pattern mic, but the supply has nine settings for more flexibility.

The B Series mics are finished, and the packaging is almost done, so we expect they will ship to us in two weeks, so allowing time for shipping, they will be in the dealers by the end of March. We are very close baring no other problems.

hey alan,
i have a vc6q and a c-1....i really like the vc6q and im thinking about getting another. If i waited and got the studio projects tube pre...what would be the difference in the vocal sound. In other words how do the 2 units compare sound wise?
Also, which mic in the b series will retail close to the c-1's retail price and how do these 2 mic's compare ? (i need another mic too)

thanks

thanks, alan.
sounds like i'll have some tube flavor to use on my next record.

So whats the street price the dealers are going to advertise for the B3? If the List Price advertised at Studio Projects home page is only $99.99 then I can't imagine the street price being below $79.99, it would be nice to have it around $59.00 so the Nady stuff goes away in all the catelogs....Im thinking maybe I should get one as a secondary for mic'ing my Marshall Cabinet.....

Peace,
Dennis

ouch, i just realized i mixed up the b3 and the tb1.
so alan what's the street price for the new mics?

The VTB-1 is different than the VC6Q because the VC6Q is a chip based design. It uses the SSM2017 mic pre IC Chip. The warmth and color of that mic pre come from the compressor. The VTB-1 is a descrete circuit. It is uses no IC's, so the result is a more detailed response, a more transparent and clean sound. So it is different, and different is good because the more flavors you have...the better. The cool thing is the VTB-1 has the tube drive, so you can add some air, or warmth, or crank it to get full blown distortion. The VTB-1 is definately way more flexible than the VC6Q as a mic pre, but it does not have the compressor or EQ...but we have models slated to incorporate them later this year. So yes, there will be a difference in the vocal sound between them.

The street price is only an estimate, but my guess is:

B1 $ 79.00
B3 $149.00
TB1 $299.00

so, it looks like the tb-3's retail is just going to be slightly above the c-1. Maybe I need to wait on a mic and check out the t-3. I was thinking i needed another c-1, so i would have a matched set...for recording a live gig. The C-1 hanging from the cieling a few feet from the stage sounds really good (in mono)....maybe a c-1 left and a tb-3 right would sound good too

Thanks Alan,

my guess was only a little off. Is the introduction of the new B series from SP the reason why the low end MXL's like the V67M and V63M are having a huge price reduction at most mail order places? Anyhow, another quick B1 question...whats the response curve on it. I have the MXL V63M and Im hoping the curve is similar but with some flatness towards the 20k mark. The 63 drops pretty quick and there is a pretty steep dip between the 20hz and 30hz. Being a poor fella, the prices are perfect for budget home recordists. The 63 seems pretty good, but like everyone else...upward movement is nice...

Peace,
Dennis

Well, I have no idea what Marshall is doing. I guess you have to ask yourself, why and how can they afford to keep reducing the price on the V67 and their other models. I can't reduce the C1 or the C3, so I wonder how they are doing it. If it is only to either compete with the B Series, that would be a costly mistake. They should just come out with a different line of mics like I did. If I reduce the C1 and C3, I am out of business, so who knows what they are doing.

The B Series is almost here. On the boat as we call it. Again, the response curve is not yet done, so that will have to wait. The B1 is pretty smooth and flat up towards the 20K region, but final testing will complete soon.

Well that depends on how you are recording them. If you are using large booms and picking up from above, the B1's pointing down on an angle will work fine. The B3's in Omni using them as room mics will work great as well. I tend to mic them from above, but your room may have different acoustics, so you're on your own there. Are you are going to use only 1 mic, get the B3 and try it in Omni as a room mic.
