Stratocaster pickup question

I would recommend a Seymour Duncan JB Jr , I had the same hum problem , I however got lucky and was at a guitar show here in Dallas and the guy was ready to leave , but he had a bunch of Duncan pickups , and I picked up on a JB Jr for $25 , I had never tried them before , but it was $25 , so I checked it out . They are the same size as the standard single coil in the Strat and they come with wiring instructions in the box , real simple install.

Rock On

$25? That's a sweet deal!

I'm using the SCN pups, which come with the deluxe strats.

No hum, and I like the sound very much.

Or you can go straight to the source, Bill Lawrence himself (the one who designed the Noiseless pickups for Fender), at www.billlawrence.com

His pickups are very reasonably priced (like $50 or so for his Noiseless ones) and they sound amazing, IMHO. That's what I'm going to put in my parts Tele I'm building.

www.billlawrenceusa.com is not it though. That's his partner Jzchak Wajcman's company. (Nasty legal battle.)

...I'm about to put them in my new strat, so if you wait a couple weeks I'll be able to give you a report on them. The Kinmans, however, are awesome pickups.

Color me interested. I've had a set of Gold Lace Sensors in my Strat for years, and have actually been quite happy with them, but you know how never-ending the quest for better tone is. :D

I tried the Fender Noiseless pickups when they first came out, and hated them. They "felt" wrong, a little compressed and not as sparkly as a real singlecoil, whereas the Lace Sensors were noticeably better.

I've also been tempted to grab a EMG Gilmour SA setup, but I don't want to deal with batteries if I can help it...

Hello Everyone,

This is not really a recording question, but I can not think of anywhere else to look for help, so here it goes:

I currently play a Fender Strat. I love the way they feel and everything, but I can't stand the single coil humm. I have been thinking about upgrading it to a couple Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB™ Humbucker pickups. I am not sure if this would work or how to do it. If i bought a new pick guard fitted for them, would this be a possibility? Is it hard to wire everything to the volume nobs? What about the pickup selector switch? I really appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,

Head over to the Seymour Duncan page and look in the community or help section. There is a forum link over there and the guys on that site rock.

One other option for you might be a split single... If i understand correctly the first 3 poles are wrapped south and the second 3 are wrapped north... It still looks like a regular single coil and it requires no alteration to you guard or body and it eliminates the hum.

I think they have a stacked one too where the top of the pick up is wrapped north and bottom is wrapped south.

hate to rain on your parade, but the strat sound... the real strat sound, is normal singles... with the noise.

Hit the SD site though. Many helpful people.

If you want it to sound like a Strat without the hum, try either Kinmans or the new Seymour Duncan Strat Stack Plus pickups. I've not actually heard the Seymour Duncans, but I've heard a lot of good things about them, and I'm about to put them in my new strat, so if you wait a couple weeks I'll be able to give you a report on them.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.

I'm a happy camper.

Yeah, so I've got these pickups (Seymour Duncan Classic Stack Plus STK-S4s) in this guitar, and I just can't seem to put it down. I was up until about 6:00 A.M. last night, and I was very nearly late for work today. Now, maybe that's just the supper light Ash body, but I doubt it.

Killer pickups. Not, perhaps, as good as Kinmans - certainly not better - but very close.

I'm a very happy camper.

If you want my recommendation for a noiseless "single coil", consider this it.

You, um, that's as close to outright raving as I've ever heard from a guy with a good amount of experience under his belt. STK-S4's, eh? I just might grab a set on my next paycheck and see how they hold up. Thanks!

(and how noiseless are they? I'm your typical bedroom studio guy, so I spend a lot of time in front of a monitor)

im sorry to get off topic...

but i never really understood the fear of this NOISE FROM HELL.

does it really even make a difference? if you're rocking out you can't hear the hum at all, neither can the audience. the only time you hear it is when you're not playing... but... the thing has a volume knob... so you can just turn that down.

and when recording? Airbrush that shit out in cubase or whatever. simple. or leave it in. kickass.

to me, a guitar has always been a wild beast wife-of-tarzan type woman who is completely out of control as a general rule. the only way to tame her, i've found, is to twist her nipple. the nipple, in this specific case, is the volume knob.

or... if you want to get really fancy... you could just stomp on your tuner and cut the signal to the amp altogether. and hey... since you've got that tuner on... might as well tune that bitch as well.

plus... it is what it is. if you don't want any of this... noise... pick up your takamine and play simon and garfunkel.

hendrix had noise.

I know guys who feel both ways. Some guys just reach for the volume know (or step on their volume pedals), but others just feel embarrassed and unprofessional on stage if their guitars are humming like that. Also, guys who spend most of their playing time around neon lights get a lot more of it than guys who mostly play in church, so different folks have different perspectives. Plug your amp into the same circuit as the beer cooler, and your going to hear while you are playing.

Different strokes, I believe, is the operating principle here.

What if there are neon lights in your church? ;^)
