Why is it that when I try to load a cooledit session, it keeps telling me stupid things like "it can't find track 4 (2)" and wants to know where it is.

I don't ever remember creating a "track 4(2)." I created a track 4 and I have a "track 4part2," a "track4.bassguitar" and stuff like that. But I would never name a file and put a number in parenthases like that.

Why is this program so damn screwy? Just open the session the way I saved it with the file names I saved them as. Why is that so difficult?

I think it puts (x) there to stop duplicates. Like if you already had a 'Track 4.wav' and recorded another section on track 4, it would be called 'Track 4(2).wav' until you renamed it or merged it.

It also does this if you copy a wav to another track, if that makes sense...the copy doesn't keep the same name, it uses the next available (x)...you get used to it and it even starts to make sense after a while.

As to why it can't find it...well either you renamed it after partially saving the session, so the .ses file was looking for name x when it had been renamed to y afterwards, or you saved it to the wrong directory. The second is more likely and is always happening to me.

To other thing is that if you record something that gets named 'Track 4(2).wav' by Cool Edit, then decide you don't want to keep it, and go to >EDIT>REMOVE WAVE BLOCK...the file is only removed from the Multitrack view, it is still refered to in the .SES (session) file and CEP will still try to load it the next time you open the session. The way around this is to use >EDIT>DESTROY WAVE BLOCK instead if you definately don't want it.

That probably could have been clearer but I hope it helps.

I had the same thing happen to me in version 1.2a.
To remedy this...I renamed ALL wavs in all tracks to their respective names. ..ie...bassverse1, leadguitchorus3..etc..

But since I upgraded to 2.0..I haven't had to do this..I can have files named track 14(1.2.2.1 or whatever and no prob..

Chessrock, I agree. CEP 1.2 is a pain in the ass when it comes to file management. I have the same problem you're having, and I still haven't quite sorted it out. Like Papillon, I think it happens because Cool's confused between the Session information and the tracks that are actually there to be loaded.

You can avoid a lot of this bullshit by using Save As in Edit View a lot (saving one track at a time), and then using Save As for the whole session with a new session name. I also use the Delete Non-Session Tracks command before the final Save As. I think this creates a new session file.

Another pain in the ass for me is how there seems to be no necessary correlation between what Cool thinks is in a session and what Windows Explorer thinks is there. I'm always having to 'delete' tracks in Explorer that Explorer thinks are there, but which no longer exist in the Cool Session.

By the way, when Cool screws up and asks you to retrieve an oddly-named track for a session, you know how to do that, right?

If CEP is such a quirky program....why use it??

I think it has alot more to do with the learning curve and familiarizing yourself with how things work. Let us stop blaming CEP. Every other program has things about it which make no sense.

When CEP tries to load a track that wasnt clearly saved (that has a name like track 4(2)) thats bec CEP saved the track or you saved it as its default name without realizing it. All you have to do is press cancel and it continues to load. When you finished working in that session, save and close it. The next time you open it, it shouldnt ask you for the track.

Track 4(2) is your second try at recording in track 4 in the same session. You should delete the wave you first recorded in track 4 before saving.

Because the others are way more quirkier!

If you can't do basic file management and know where your files are and what there called then don't use a computer. Go back to tape. I've never had a file handling problem with any software. I just use my brain to manage files, not the tin brain!

Jusum, you said: "All you have to do is press cancel and it continues to load. When you finished working in that session, save and close it. The next time you open it, it shouldnt ask you for the track."

Yes, that's right, but sometimes when you click Cancel, Cool doesn't load all the files that are actually in the session, some or all of which you want loaded.
