Strange piece of Equipment aquired. . .what is it?

An engineer at my radio station was cleaning out the "back office" and asked me if there was anything I wanted (mind you this is the same guy who hooked me up with a classic VU DBX 160. . .which I turned around and sold for $600). He starts telling me about this Unit made by Harris Gates. . .Don't really know to much about it besides the fact that it's old and it has Tubes. . .bout 20 lbs too. . .

The only thing it has is Input levels. . .output and "calibrate" knobs. . .it also says
Gates on one side and FM Top Level on the other side. . .

I know nothing nor have been able to find any info on this unit

Please. . .even speculation would help me at this point. . .no it's not a pizza oven
 
You may have more luck searching under Gates-Harris. They made all kinds of radio broadcast gear, apparently.
 
maybe a limiter/compressor?? AFN here in Heidelberg has a sweet one that I have my eye on...military gear looks damn cool..
 
Yeah it looks like it could be military based. . .the engineer said it was a limiter. . .how do they sound? What applications? Are they Tubes?

So I found a manual for sale on the net . . .the actual name is
GATES FM TOP LEVEL AMPLIFIER
So what does it do?

Sounds like an old Gates STA Level limiter. If so, it's a cool old leveler that has a very thick sound, not clean or pristine. Cool unit:)

Woah, reading about this military business made me dress in fatigues for tonight's gig.

Should be interesting, luckily it isn't at an RSL club.
