strange delay problem when recording

as I mentioned in a previous thread, I'm just getting into the whole home recording scene but I do have a bit of experience with different software and hardware.

While doing my research/gathering funds for the hardware, I have been doing some playing around with various software trials and freewares (audacity, kristal, ableton live, acid) and have a problem which occurs with every peice of software I've tried so it is obviously in the hardware.

Basically, since I dont have a real interface yet, I just plug the line out from my bass amp into the line in on my computers sound card. The quality of course is poor and I cant do alot with it, but mostly I'm just trying to get a feeling for software, fancy recordings arnt important right now.
However, the problem is that no matter what software I'm using, the sound is delayed. Meaning there is a fraction of a second from the time I pluck a string to the time I hear it / it gets recorded on my computer. THis is especially obviouse when I play along with a drum loop, and to me when I'm playing it sounds and feels fine but when I playback, the bass that I just recorded is lagging the loop. of course some moving around in the recording software fixes this, but it seems odd that there is a delay here.
I've dried leaving out the bass amp and just plugging the bass directy into the line in but still get the same results.

Is it just due to my lack of a real recording interface? if so then I wont worry about it and it will hopefully go away once I get all my gear planned out and purchased. However, if the problem is larger than that, then I want to address it before I spend any money on a recording interface.

thanks,
pedro

What you're experiencing is latency. This is due to the built-in soundcard, as they're not designed for real-time music applications such as recording. This is perfectly normal.

When shopping for an audio interface, look for ones with ASIO drivers, which allow for latencies down to 2ms (your current soundcard's on the other hand is probably around 32ms).

Anyway, do a search for "latency" and I'm sure you'll come accross tons of post on this topic.
