Hi guys!! I borrowed my fathers Roland Jv-35 to try with my setup. I'm using a Triton Le as the main sequencer and just using the roland as a sound module. In the Triton Le sequencer, i can only select the Roland's 127 general midi sounds and can't access the expansion board sounds. As a result, i changed the global settings on the triton so i couldn't do program change. That way, i can choose whatever sound i want by hand on the roland for all 16 tracks. Problem is, now i have no way of saving the voice selection so that when i open the song in the triton, it'll have the same sounds. Is there an easier way to do this besides writing the voice numbers down(i'm lazy :D )? I tried changing the bank numbers in the triton sequence midi parameters to see if i could access the other sounds(works with my yamaha psr-540) but on the roland it just says "no sounds in this bank". He didn't bring the manual, but i'm going to try to find it online. If anyone can help me, please respond! It would be very much appreciated!

That's the whole point of the GeneralMidi specification, giving users a set pattern of voices for every GM device.

Otherwise, MIDI is just note-on, note-off information that can be ANYTHING you want. No manufacturer is obligated to make anything match anything else, so no you're out of luck.

I figured that. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the reply.

You are not necessarily out of luck. Most modern-ish synths have a way to select their backs from MIDI. You should know that there are several ways to select a bank - is certain cases a Controller 0 followed by Controller 32 then the bank number selects the bank on MOST roland synths. Some require two program changes in a row, the first of which being the bank (if I recall correctly).

You may have to play with it a bit and try both. Or look up the bank select method in the user manual.

See i'm able to do that with my yamaha becuase all the bank #'s are in the manual. I don't have the roland manual and i've tried to find it online in pdf form with no luck. I'll try what you've said to see if it works. So the bank would go 000 for the first one and 032 for the second one then i choose the sound right? Will do as soon as i get off work. Thanks!!

You need to check the bank select method. That varies from synth to synth. If you don't get that right, you won't be able to select the proper bank.

You could also try just recording the midi output from the roland when changing to the bank/patch you want. It should send it as a msg and then all you need to do is to play that msg before the track starts in the sequencer
