I searched and read some of the threads that pertain to this subject, and got very depressed. I'm hoping it's because most people ask about acoustic drums, not e-drums.
Here's the thing: I have been playing acoustic drums in my apartment, but I'm moving and that won't be possible. So I'm building e-drums from an old acoustic set.
I know e-drums have a problem with the vibration of playing them and bouncing your heels going through the floor. I'm pretty sure this is solvable for most apartments - I would just appreciate your advice figuring out what is the best solution.
The first thing I tried was a tennis ball platform (1/2" plywood with small holes in it to rest on top of a layer of tennis balls). Worked okay. Not great. Kind of wobbly.
My other options are:
- Getting a thick rubber treadmill mat from a place like Rubbercal. They have a mat called the SharkTooth which is very thick, very heavy, and designed to stop vibrations http://rubbercal.com/Shark_Tooth_Mat.html
- Get U-boats from Auralex. But I know very little about these, and they seem to be designed for use under risers whereas I just want a flat board for my floor.
- Get Platfoam from Auralex ... but a few people have told me this isn't the best.
One of these would be the base. Then I would put something heavy on top (probably 1/2" plywood; other recommendations have included lead sheet, a layer of bricks, etc), topped with carpet padding and carpet foam.
Any one of these seem better than the others? I'd really appreciate some advice.
Thanks.
