ok i want a mic for vocals but i still have no idea which one to get or even which brand to get so some suggestions would be nice..... i want a mic the is just really clear no muffeled sound at all ..... i guess tht would be called crisp but my limit is $300

I used a Rode NT3 for the music in my signature line. It's clean and crisp.

Studio Projects C1 (solid state) or used MXL V77 (tube)...both excellent for "crisp"vocals, (the V77 is cleaner and the C1 a bit more colored)... and both around $199...add a Peluso metal pop screen ($29.)

...add a top grade mic (Mogami or Monster) cable and you're good to go...

(and don't overlook the vocal "bargain mic" of the lot...the MXL V67...best bang for under $100. bucks!)

does the high quality mic cable or the metal pop filter really make a difference?

as of right now im leaning towards the AT4040.... i heard the most about it

do you have a preamp with a lot of clean gain? It's not the most crisp vocal mic for 300 dollars, just the best suited for the most voices...

Shure SM7 -- a wonderful mic (Michael Jackson, CSNY, and a host of others)

Some other hot dynamics:

EV RE20 -- Stevie Wonder's vocal mic in the 70s
EV RE15 -- the sound of motown, but a little on the rare side

If you buy used you could get one of these AND a MXL v67.

Good quality dynamic > cheap condenser... if you have a preamp with a lot of clean gain (50db+).

KSM27 or 4040...

Both are built great and have a good versatile sound. Both are mics that will still be around when you move on to much more expensive stuff.

If you have lots of clean gain, you might consider one of the low-end Chinese ribbon mics like the Nady RSM-2 or the t.bone... I don't know the model.... Should be able to get either within that price range pretty easily. Output level is about the same as a typical (standard) dynamic, so if you find an SM57/58 noisy, stay away.

Anyway, I have the Nady RSM-2. First one was DOA. Second one, though... I like. Your mileage may vary.

No offense at all to anyone who uses and likes Nady mics, but...

If you have $300 to spend, don't get a Nady. There is a HUGE difference between a Nady and something like the KSM27 and the AT4040. You could actually bring a ksm27 or at4040 to a commercial studio and find a use for it. Also...15 years from now, it will still be going strong and probably getting good use from you.

I have not used the Nady being recommended, but I've used other models. The brand in general is no Shure or Audio Technica. If you had less money and could only afford a Nady, then that's a different story. But for $300, you can get something really good.

i was thinking about getting the m-audio tampa pre hows that for crisp?

Chalk up another vote for the Audio Technica AT4040. It is indeed a flawlessly crisp, clean microphone. It was well worth the $299 price tag. I got mine three weeks ago and use it for voice-over work.
