Sterling ST77, Low-baritone narration and vocals

As the subject says, looking for input on the Sterling Audio ST77 microphone. I'm piecing together a light home studio with the intent of doing narration and some hobbyist singing. My voice is low baritone, high bass, and fairly smooth.

I've done quite a bit of reading, though I know I have years to go before I can even begin to consider myself understanding of the dynamics of recording. But, I'd like to start somewhere. A friend is offering me his mint condition (read: used once or twice) ST77 for $275. Shock mount, pop filter included. Sounds like a great deal, considering they are worth much more new, but he isn't local so I don't have the chance to try it out. Based on my limited knowledge, the ST77 seems to be a good budget mic for my purposes.

I searched these forums, but the feedback on the ST77 is limited. Hoping someone has some more recent input.

If I overlooked the answer, please, point me there! Thanks everyone.
 
They list for $500. At about half price I would say you could get your money back by re-selling it if you didn't like it. I have never heard one but it seems to get good reviews.

Yes, and there was some speculation that it was the same microphone as another lower-end one, but I think someone on these forums proved they weren't by inspecting the internals. I don't recall the details, though.

So I went ahead and picked it up. I need to pick up a preamp, only need maybe two mic inputs and two direct inputs (for my guitar) right now, as my only serious outlook is for narration and voice overs. Looks like I have tons of options for preamps, so I guess I'll just choose one in my budget and go from there.

Maybe I'll post up some recordings once I get the mic situated and everyone can butcher my lack of audio mastering skills. :)
 
Knowing the Chinese mic manufacturers, it's almost certainly the same internals as at least eight or ten other mics. If they found it to be different, they were just not comparing it with the right one.... :)

That one looks to be basically the same mic as the Avant Electronics CV-12 and the MXL Genesis. That's not saying that they'd be identical inside—there may be different types of capacitors used and different tubes and stuff, but chances are, they're pretty close.

In fact, I think I bought something virtually identical in the group buy a few months back. I used it yesterday for some VO recording at work. :D

I'm using a chinese made Apex that I bought for ~$200 and some dollars. How good are your mixing skills? I find that a person with really good ears and mixing skills can make a crap mic/pre-amp/settup sound amazing with the right EQ/compression etc.

Skills > Any Gear
