I have recorded quite a bit in mono but never
in stereo and have no clue how to go about it
except by using two mics. Can I change mono
tracks to stereo in the computer. Cool edit
has a convert deal. How do I record stereo directly in to my adat through the mackie? Do
I use two channels and pan one right one left? Do I recombine them later on? Whas up.

Hey dragonworks - well, there's recording stereo tracks (in CEP, for example), and there's stereo micing (using two mics in any of about a handful of standard positions and any number of unusual ones you might come up with on your own). I record my tracks mono, but I stereo mic all the time, because I like the sound so much on both voice and acoustic guitar.

A long time ago, I asked about recording in stereo on the Syntrillium bbs. I forget what the response was, but I remember thinking at the time that it wasn't what I was needing.

Hope this helps more than it confuses.

Do you bring the two mics into one channel or
a seperate channel? Do you pan either channel
to what sides? I have never recorded into a
computer, only to the adat through a Mackie
1604. Was going to do the computer but couldn't use my adat pcr card to monitor existing tracks while recording. This may
be an alesis forum question for the sonusman
but I think the adat has to be in all input or something like that where the converters are all going one way and cant act separtely
to record and monitor or somehow thats how
alesis tech told me. It would be nice to find
some way around it without buying a huge sound card purpose. I have not much expierience with micking insrtuments usually
going direct though I have done some. If going direct into the mackie how do I set up
the stereo. Can I come in one channel and put
it on a bus to bus 1+2 and pan them seperatley? Can I then drop them down into the computer; I keep forgeting that I can have as many tracks as I want on the computer. I'm getting off track here,ha ah,
I have also never mixed more than 8 tracks at
a time, (bless me father for I have sinned it
has been 35 years since my last confession. I
have commited every sin except murder at least twice) It seems my main problem is not
being able to monitor back from the computer while recording. I kept worrying about not
enough tracks by using 2 if recording in stereo. If I can monitor the computer mix and
still get another signal in on say track 28?
I can put as many stereo tracks as I want. Now, I still dont know how to record in stereo and have probably gotten myself more
confused. HELP ive fallen and I cant
get up

Simplify. Simplify.
Leave out the ADAT until you really need it. Go direct to PC from the mixer.
Monitor the mix from the mixer.
Record the mix on the computer.

I have tried this before. I have had 4 or 5 tracks on the computer and using the adat
as my converter I tried to record a track directly into my computer but was unable to
monitor the existing tracks because I had no converters to come back out of. Is there
any way I can use the pcr card to get tracks
in while monitoring through my computers existing soundcard simultaneously?

I think I need to clarify this a little. 99%
of the time I am recording 5 to 8 tracks at
a time and I only have the pcr card to get into my computer with. My adat, I have been told by alesis tech, sets up to only convert one way at a time. I now set up the adat as
all digital out(?)going into my adat pcr card. Since I am now set to my pcr card in the multimeda sections of the control panel my sound card (ensoniq pci)I think is operative in my system? I cant go out of the
pcr card using the adat because I am set to
all digital out (?) to record with and my
sound card is not able to put audio out to
my system. Therefore I am unable to monitor
existing tracks and tracks coming in at the
same time. I have never tried not using the
adat. I will get the adaptors I need this week to get into the computer directly and try going into my sound card. Sonusman warned
us about this problem with pcr cards, alesis
told me I would need to buy another set of
digital converters and that I could use another adat?
