I am having trouble recording from the stereo input on my MOTU 828. When I record in Sonar it only shows up in the right stereo field wavefrom and I can only monitor it through my right ear in headphones. I can get stereo if I record two tracks simultaneously one recording the right input and one recording the left but I really sholdn't have to do this. I've tried switching some things around but can't correct it. What is going on? Thanks.

Jamie,
Duuude...Check the channel input on sonar and make sure that you have assigned its thoughput correctly. On the channel your are recording onto. Channel 1/2 stereo...Should be the selction. I assume you are coming off of a mixer? Make sure you have your trs cables hooked into the correct inputs (1 Left and 2 right) From the mixer to the motu.

Thanks for the info. I'm still working it out. I was actually recording directly from a mic into the preamp on channels 1 and two. I tried another cable with the same result. Maybe I don't have it hooked up right. I will try re-installing Sonar.

Doh, sorry, somehow I missed that you mentioned you were running SONR in your initial post... the reason I was asking is that I believe I read recently that Cakewalk 8 (and earlier, I presume) did not have a single stereo track, that you needed to use two individual tracks, one sourced to the L input and the other to the R input, for stereo.

Gidman is right. If the soundcard's drivers support it, there should be something like Channel 1/2 or L/R, which directs two channels of the soundcard to a single track. I doubt re-installing SONAR will help. Maybe try profiling the soundcard first...

ok, I thought that might be the case. I was hoping that I could record in stereo from one channel but that's not a big deal.
Thanks.

Jamie,

You should be able to record it on both left and right on the same channel. Set up your software to accept channel 1 input stereo 1/2. Use your stereo main outs on your mixer and put the trs cable from the board into the motu inputs 1 and 2...
Are you using trs stereo cables? I know some I/O's may have xlr inputs use them they are better.

I know this is an old post, but I ran across it when searching for this topic.

I am having the same problem. When I bounce multiple mono tracks down to a single stereo track, I still only hear it on the right headphone. It sucks when your adding tracks to the project while listening to it in the right ear only.

I am using a Rolls Headphone Distribution Amp plugged into the headphone jack on a MOTU 828.

Oh, I'm using Sonar v2.0.

I'm not sure what I can do to be able to monitor it in stereo.

Thanks.

Scott.

What do you mean, STILL? Do you only hear it in one ear BEFORE you mixdown as well?

Excuse me for asking the obvious, but are you using a stereo cable to connect the Rolls to your soundcard? What happens when you plug the headphones directly into the soundcard's headphone jack?

Obvious question #2, can I assume you don't have the tracks all panned to the right?

I forgot to mention that my input monitoring only plays on the right side also. That's why I said 'still', I was mentally thinking about the input monitoring issue when typing the post.

Yes, I am using Stereo plugs and cables. Yes, I have tested the headphones and they work fine in stereo.

I still only hear sound in the right ear when I plug directly in the MOTU's headphone jack.

hehe All tracks are "panned center."

Thanks for the reply dachay2tnr.

Oh, I do not have this issue when I use CEP v2.0. I also do not have latency issues in CEP (have 2.2 ms in Sonar). But I like Sondar better. heh

OK, we're narrowing this down, but you still didn't answer all my questions.

Your post implies this only happens after you mixdown (bounce) to a single stereo track. Does this mean that when you listen to the mix before bouncing you are hearing things in both ears?

Also, there are multiple pan locations in Sonar's track view. For each track there are a couple on the FX tab for the busses, plus one on the Mix tab. Then there are pan sliders on the VMains and Aux Busses as well. Are they all centered?

So my next question is what VMain are you using as the OUT setting on your tracks? Is that VMain visible in your Track View, and if so, what is it's pan setting?

Oh, and one other thought. Is there a Left and Right input connection on the Rolls? Where are you plugged into? Usually on these things only one jack will work for stereo input (normally the Left). On second thought, I guess if it works OK with CEP under the same configuration, the problem is more likely to be somewhere in one of your Sonar settings.

Nope, I only hear sound the right at all times (input monitoring, playback, etc.).

ALL pan setting are center (all tabs, FX, aux). I'm not sure what you mean by "vmain" in the OUT. Are you talking about the main volume settings?

The Rolls has a stereo plug for each channel.

I was wondering if I should not use the "phones plug" and use the left and right monitor plugs into the Rolls using a 1/4" adapter (two male monos to female stereo y-adapter)? I would MUCH rather use the "phones plug" because my monitors are plugged in to them.

Thanks again.

I have a relevent question.

When I am converting my MIDI tracks (recorded from my Triton Le) to audio, I can only get it to play from the left side. I'm using the line in/audio out connector, which is mono, but I just got an adapter to use both the L and R audio outputs on the keyboard, and it does the same thing.

The MIDI plays only out of the left side in the first place, but how can I get it converted to stereo and not just one side? Is it because of the line in connection that I can't do it?
