I'm wondering about adding a second preamp so that I can record things in stereo....Right now I have a Safesound P1 that I am trying out (thanks Warren!), using Oktava MK012, AT 4040, and SM-57 mics into a Motu 828mk2. A second mic could be another matched Oktava, or the MXL 604 on the acoustic guitar...
The SS seems to be a great value, especially in using the limiter and compressor with my vocal style (tenor), which include having my 8-year old doing a podcast. But that may not be the most important application I have....
In my small project studio (yes, I'm working on the room itself) I'm wanting to do several things, and do them well. Recording a band (we're mostly using the other guitarists Mackie Onyx) - but I want to be able to track my telecaster well on its own (for adding tracks as well as into his board) - the tone ranges from sweet to good nasty through an old Vibrolux. I also want to record with complete pristineness my 1940 Gibson acoustic ranging from jazz and country blues styles to simply doing harmonic overtone dubs...
And would like to do acoustic, almost meditative music for "healing" (being in the field myself)
So having 1 or 2 really good mic-pres seems the ticket, and having stereo seems important - now do the pres need to match?
What d'ya all think
here's some options I've lined up, kind of pricewise:
1. Use the 2 mic pres in Motu, at least they match (no votes, I'm sure)
2. The SS ($600) plus a Motu mic pre
3. Return SS and get FMR RNP/RNC rack ($680) for stereo
4. The SS plus the Rane for the second channel (+$140 = $740)
5. Add a DMP-3 ($150) for 2 matched channels, thus 3 pres ($750)
6. Return and invest in Great River mono pre ($975?) (same questions apply about how to add the second channel
7. Get 2 pairs of Safesounds ($1200)
