Lost in the Fog
Hello all,

I'm a veteran musician and soundman. Just starting out with digital recording though. Will be putting together my system over the next few months. Starting off with budget gear for now then investing more later when I know more about it.

Of course I have been reading about digital recording for about a year now. I've always had a strong interest in studios and a passion for outboard gear. Have been recorded on 3 CD's as a musician. The last one was made on DAW. I helped track and mix it a little and loved working with the system.

Since being a soundman for bar bands, making the switch to recording them shouldn't be too awfully painful. Should it? I wish to go mobile and record live using 16 to 24 channels. Perhaps more if needed.

At any rate, here is the question...

I am thinking of buying the Steinberg VSL 2020 input Card for my PC. I am wondering if it is compatible with all other hardware and software or only with Steinbergs stuff?

I plan to buy about (2) 8 channel mic pres, (2) 8 channel A/D converters with lightpipe out, ADAT PCI card, software and a few decent mics.

As I said, just a budget system. Enough to get a start. I will surely upgrade as I go.

Thanks in advance for any advice. (I know, I know! Run away as fast as you can, right?)

Thanks,
Gordon

your plan will work fine. I use an ADAT XT for A/D. not ideal but it works. since your just starting out my only advise(the stuff i had problems with when i first put this together) is make sure your clock is set the same on everything. I recorded once with the adat set to 48khz and the computer set at 44.1khz on accident. I never noticed it sounding weird until someone else that played on the cd said something. So any thing with adat outs will work with it.

From what i can see you might as well forget the seperate a/d convertors and mic pres and purchase a mixing desk which incorporates those needs instead.

Keith
