Static/Noise While Recording LP's

I'm new to this stuff, too. I'm using Audacity to record some of our old LP's onto CD's, and it's been working great until now. I've made CD's out of five LP's, and they play on our stand-alone sound systems. I've learned to monitor the LP while it's being recorded. This morning, when I tried to record some more, there was loud static over the music. I tried three different LP's, and the result was the same. All my connections seem to fine. Can you help?

It could be one of many things really.. The most common i'd say would be the cables your using - Have you tried using a different cable?

I don't know much about Audacity, but when your recording - there's no effects being added is there? Normalizing a track, if it's a low signal, would give it alot of hiss.

I doubt it's a software issue unless your doing anything to the audio when it's been recorded, so i'd look more at the cable/set up your using.

Thanks for getting back to me. The cables are brand new -- I just got them a couple of weeks ago. Could one or more of them gone bad this fast? Also, I'm wondering about the stylus. It worked perfectly on the five LP's I've recorded onto CD's (through Audacity & iTunes), but I've since tried eight LP's -- in addition to one I've already recorded onto a CD -- and get the same loud static with the music decidely softer in the background.

If they're new, it's doubtful they've gone bad so soon - but it's certainly not a case of dismissing the idea.

You'll need to try and narrow it down a bit. Try running the LPs just through some speakers, if your getting no static then you know it's something relating to the computer.

If it's playing it fine, check the inputs on your computer. Are you using the on-board soundcard?
