I just laid down a tune I wrote a LONG time ago. It's a bouncy little hard rocker recorded and mixed it in about 10 hours. One take vocals for the most part and it's simple as hell, but it was fun reminiscing! I just wanted to test out a few new approaches with my set-up. No need to trash me on the tune itself too much :D

unless you REALLY just HAVE to

I won't be doing much with this tune, but I did it, so what the hell...

great song!

damn! I suck.. nuff said..

The mix sounds good over here.. Nice guitar playing... Lower the high hat and the ride.. Very cool song.. I love the guitar riff and the vocals.. the drums..

damn dude... recorded and mixed in ten hours?

it ain't fair I tell ya!! :D

Soundgarden vibe

That riff, the opening lick -- reminiscent of Kim Thayl (sp?). Nice "mischevious", mysterious sounding verse. I'll put mix comments on this later -- as I'm listening on the PC. (The MAC is connected to monitors)

Love the power in the kick drum. Nice lead licks! Do we have another Jeff Marcomb here? :D Good idea to octave/double the vox. There is something weird sounding about the hat... too much "air under it"? But that's all I'll dare say until hearing it on monitors.

Pretty good song. Thumbs up, sunglasses on, toothy grin spread :D

Wow. Now the mix is good as usual. The kick drum sound is a bit too clicky, or snappy. It's hard to describe. Sound too much like a midi kick. The kick has also too much thump. It's distorting at least on my headphones. I like your guitar riff ideas. They're not the usual, but they definately work and they've got your own flavour in them. You really did an awesome mix on such a short time. And this song really isn't a "short rock song". This is good. The hi-hats are maybe too loud, or have too much high-end. They sound too hissing to me. Good mix, good song.

Thanks fellas. Ya I'm sure the drums are a little weak. I did barely ANY EQing. Midi drums usually need some, but I was getting hungry. I wanted to see how it would sound if I just didn't mix it so much, and worried more about good tracking...

I think it worked. This is a rock solid mix.Good solid tracks is what it's all about.Drums sound great except for the high hat....It sounds just a little too loud....It's nice and crisp but just a tad too loud.Nice guitar playing as usual.........damn, will I ever be able to get this good of a sound......well,thanks again for making me want to sell my shit.:(

Very cool hook at the beginning of the song, and throughout. I was totally into this.

I can only listen in lo-fi, so I don't really have any mixing notes, except that the vocals were kind of buried and hard to make out. My only feedback may be to raise them a bit in the mix, but it may just be my machine...I just looked at some of the other posts and nobody else mentions it, so it is probably just on my end. Everyone else is mentioning the drums, but they sound good over here...

Amazing that you did this in 10 hours.

Great job!

Excellent ...love your song writing and performance...

...what are you using for drums?

very cool!

Sluice,

Nice production!
I liked the contrast between the quiet and heavy guitar parts.
I especially dig your lead guitar sound and playing, great!

The mix seems fine,very big.
Good writing.
No trashing here,(man and I tried so hard!):D

Really nice performance!

Best to you,
Pete

listening again, the vocals are a bit low, especially in the beginning.. It's hard to make out the lyrics..

nice drum programming too.. lower the high hat and the ride...

definitely another great tune..

You know the drill...vocals up! (Have we had this conversation before?) :D

I love the guitar hook, and drums sounded fine on this end.
Singing is, as usual with you, excellent.

Writing...what can I say? Superb.

now that I've got that out of my system, I'll go into more detail.

This IS a radio hit. Shop it around.

The groove is great, the wildcard is mature, the song is ready.

The problems I have are that the vocal is a bit too low. Maybe a two Db increase in the vocals. Also, I should not be the one saying this since I have the same problem, but I suspect I hear pitch problems(or maybe its the level of the vocal relative to the mix)

Finally: THANKYOU.

I agree with Cyan, this is really great. The vocals could come up a db or two. I like the panning in the bg vocals. Great guitar, drum sound. Nice playing. Good use of reverb. I like the guitar and bass line through the verse. Definately, the guitar arrangement throughout the whole song is awesome.

This is a solid example of what's possible in a home recording context.

Damn, thanks guys. I didn't expect that cuz my girlfriend didn't seem to like it much. Wasn't sure if I was gonna post it. Uh oh...does that mean I'm whipped?

I passed out at 8 PM and just woke up at 4, so my speakers are low (else, she'll beat me up), but I made the changes that just about everyone pointed out. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sam- thanks for all the help lately. You're like my reality check...hmmm, go figure.

Participant- thanks for the mic help...went with a Bheringer for vox. Did most of these vox in one take with 0 EQ added. This helped a lot in reducing production time. And it looks cool too :D
Oh and Kim Thayl...I had to remember the name. It took me a while to get what you were saying, but I hear it now. Like something off from Bad Motorfinger. Actually rings a bit of Jesus Christ Pose, or something like that. Good ear...and memory.

CrankyOne- Hopefully I took care of that kick too. Low volume at this hour, so I was conservative on the EQ. Thanks CO.

Kramer- You need some money or something??? ;)

boydrj- thanks for the listen. I really love your new one!

mcmd- drums are written and programmed in Sonar and sent via midi to a Korg Triton. It's kind of an expensive way to not have to use someone else's drum loops, but luckily I have other uses for it. Thanks for checking it out.

Muzeman- Nice compliments coming from you. You're last one was commendable, even with Sam on it. (Just kidding man :D )

mkg- vocals up, Sir!

CyanJaguar- For a minute there I thought I was back in Atlantic City with the neon lights. Pitch shouldn't be too too bad, I was pretty sober ;) Hopefully with the vox up it sounds better. Or my ear sucks, wich is possible.

jjtcorsair- I tend to go a bit too wet on the verb, so it's good hear it's ok here. Thanks man.

I'm leaving for a couple weeks on Tuesday, so happy homerecin' everyone.

I'm listening to the remix.. It doesn't sound too different.. the vocals in the beginning are still too low, but they sound louder as it goes on.. you normalized this one didn't you.. It sounds great, but has that problem again where If I turn it up too much it distorts.. maybe its just me.. Still some of those same things I mentioned to you off line are still present..

still a great tune though! "Wildcard!" LOL :D

your leaving for a couple weeks? I wonder if I will have posted a new song by then.. :D

No Normalizing. Did hardly anything at all to this but a touch of reverb. But like I said it was 4 am so my speakers were super low. No big deal, I'll get to it. Just waking up for the second time today :). bowl and a coffee... Thanks though. You'd better have something in 2 weeks. :D

Ahhh. I just noticed I had my reverb busses all misdirected. What a burnout.

Real good tune. Great hook on the guitar. I thought the vocal was a little low in the quiet parts. Other than that it rocked!

Thanks TR. I think I've taken care of it just now. Hopefully the clipping Sam mentioned too.

Great tune and great sound. What did you run the guitars thru??
