I brought a speaker stand the other day and I was pleasantly suprissed with how light weight it was. I was using it with my RCF 310-A 10" active speaker.

I then discovered that it did'nt sound that great when it was raised higher up towards my ear level , I am using it like a behind me monitor , I found I lost quite a bit of the bass and with the alliminum speaker stand the sound reflected off it slightly giving the sound a slightly tiiney sound.

So I have gone back to either using the floor or using a wooden chairs that you get in outside resturants and I found that the wood helped lifed the overal sound.

Would you say those speaker stands are more suited for indoor gigs or with a sub woofer to balance out the sound?

I'd say you need to mix your sound correct for your speakers to be at the proper level if your talking about out front sound. If in fact the speakers are
no capable of sounding good while going a bit over peoples heads you may have to replace them or suplement them with a sub.

The stand has little or nothing to do with the change in sound you are perceiving. It's the location of the speaker and the reflections of sound coming off the back of the cabnit etc. If that speaker stand was made of wood it would sound pretty much identical.
