I am going to be purchasing a DAC very soon.......It will be a stand alone unit/rack mountable and of the usb type in the 300 to 400 dollar range. If anyone has any input as to their setup with this situation it would be very benificial to alot of us!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!!!

The setup i am looking at going for is

Mixer...behringer 1832 Xenyx..........I bought this a month or so ago

DI.......dont have one of these yet......ive heard that behringer makes a decent one.

A Descent Preamp in the 300 to 400 dollar range

A Compressor/Limiter/Gate..........prefferably all stand alone units.

A DAC........in the 300 to 400 dollar range

Sonar 7XL..........I just bought this a week or so ago.

As far as mic setups and such.......I am looking at the SM57 for recording guitars.

Also all of the units mentioned above will hopefully be rack mountable.

Any interface or soundcard with ASIO drivers should work. Go wild :)

I'm a bit of a sucker for Motu units (although I plan to move to RME soon), but they may be a bit out of your budget. Maybe something from M-audio like the Profire 2626? The Presonus Firepod/FP-10 can be picked up fairly cheaply second hand (note: this is firewire rather than USB).

Other than this, you could pick up a low end soundcard with ADAT I/O and get a Behringer ADA8000. This is quite a cheap but functional setup, though you may find it limiting later on. The Behringer converters are 'ok' for home studio use, but certainly nothing to shout about.

Just a question:\

How are you going to use Sonar in your chain of recording(s)?
