stand alone d.a.w s ,which one ?

I´m considering getting a stand alone d.a.w and need some advice ,i have a pretty good budget (3000Eur)what i need is to be able to record at least 14 tracks simultaniously ,fancy digital effects and built in drum computers dont rate on my must have list good input pre amps do,however i am partial to to something with a monitor and mouse where i can do graphic editing but this isn´t super important,i´m lost with the choices ,tascamsx1 ,korgd3200 akai dps24 etc.can anyone gimme some advice?

Well, a stand-alone DAW is really a little PC in an enclosure and usually no mouse--so you have to move the cursor with arrows and call up menus to do certain things.

All of the SIABs work in a similar fashion, some a bit more difficult to understand than others.

The BOSS units seem fairly easy to navigate. I use a Yam 2816 which has been replaced by a couple of other units that work in a similar, maybe easier, fashion.

Also, you could go to a PC program; there are pro/cons about either choice.

I like the stand alone, for the moment.

There are plenty of sites for you to check out to see the machinations of a SIAB [studio in a box] or a PC based program.

Those boxes you mentioned are all possibilities. But, I don't think you would need 24 tracks....but that's up to you and your recording needs.

At any rate, look around, read around, so you don't go around in circles when you drop your Euros.

I'd go with a laptop and an interface or two. I know, I'm not helping. :p
 
Opinions always differ on this issue, and there are good reasons to go either way. Personally, I have two computers but prefer the SIAB approach for my music. Here's a good place to investigate a couple of good SIAB options:

I agree with TF at this point, however...standalones, the tascam 2488 is down $100 and its really fun and high quality at 24/44 with SPDIF and extremely user friendly.

my brother is using mine as I moved to pc. he is non technical on gear, but
was running it in a day and hadn't read the manual! easy...
he and the band are recording, after the dropped $3000 in a studio and it hadn't moved much (not the studios fault, but somewhat unorganized on the bands part).

read alot before buying and Yamaha is metal and probably better if your going to be running around to clubs with it and such.
the Tascam 2488 has the features, but it isn't built for abuse. imo

Any bad press was probably from the earliest revision of software which is a dead horse now.


pc has been great to me. the editing is a blast on a 21" monitor and cut/paste...etc...

Does this requirement alone not eliminate most stand-alones under 24 tracks? My AW1600 can record up to 8 tracks simultaneously, and I assume that even most 24s have only 12 tracks simultaneous capability...

Wouldn't the PC DAWs require at least 14 channels of interface to accomplish this?
