I am planning on buying a stand alone (non computer) CD burner and need some advice. I use a Tascam 8 track cassette which I am comfortable with and have produced and sold CD's using a former band mates CDR700 burner (also Tascam?) which sounded great so I know it can be done. Also, the wife wants a CD burner to make mix CD's so it will need to be a dual well. I have no computer at home so a stand alone is my only option.
My questions/requests for opinions are:
1 - Why are these "digital audio/music only" burners like Phillips so much cheaper? I understand that the CD's cost more, but is the sound quality comparable? I've only known one person with one of these and his CD's sounded terrible (flat, no dynamics, etc) but I have no way of knowing if the original source sounded just as bad.
2 - What is the important spec to look at when comparing? I am looking at a Tascam with 24 bit conversion for $1,000, and a Denon and a Marantz of unknown conversion spec each about $700. Given that my source is a cassette 8 track am I even going to notice the difference?
3 - Has onyone else out there been in my situation and made a decision that worked out or didn't - and what would you do if you were making the decision again?
I really like my 488MKII and the CD's I made with the Tascam CD burner sounded great but is $1,000 (versus $300 for a Phillips or $700 for the Marantz or Denon) really worth it?
