Come on, fess up, who uses Staggs? I'll admit to it.

Now that my Zildjian Ks are dead my Stagg DHs are officially my favorite cymbals. Got a 16" crash, 10" splash and a 14" china and they seem to record very well indeed. They're a bit brittle up close but they crash well (unlike the cheap sabian, paiste and zildj ranges which I've tried) and they're free of nasty tones that you get with poorly made cymbals. Sound fantastic when gonged or rolled with mallets too.:)

So I'd be curious to know if there are people out there who like them enough to use them alongside more expensive cymbals and what you think these Staggs are good for and what their limitations are (used them in recordings?).

I'll be testing and buying more in the future but I don't often get the chance to hit very nice cymbals so I can't really tell whether I'm missing out on getting a really great cymbal sound.

So what cheap cymbals have you been surprised by?

my one & only stagg ended up being cracked by some mofo after a day, I now use it a la Terry Bozzio with 2 or 3 other cymbals that met with a brutal hand stacked up on each other

frankly I'd rather spend the money on one better cymbal than several cheapies

the only cheap cymbal that's made me go "yeah man" is the Wuhan chinas I've tried

Wuhan's sound quite good for the expected life of one week, and they will replace a new cymbal purchase once and only once if it breaks under warranty.

I've got a Stagg china that I love, mainly because of its cheap trashy sound. I've got a couple of Zildjian ZBT crashes (16" and 12" I think :S Can't really remember, I havn't drummed in about three months because the rest of my band are in China :() that I think sound really full and warm. The Stagg rips through the sound of the other cymbals, and I find it's great for really accenting notes, especially during blast-beats or solos.

you are talking pap.................I have a 16, 18 (now cracked by heavy handed PUNK!!!) 20, 25 & 27 inch china cymbals & they all sound awesome........even the one with crack

having said that my main chinas of choice are A custom 20"swish & a Avedis 20" swish

Yeah, Stagg rule, I've got a 16" BH crash and it really does the job. The only thing I don't like is that it only has one sound...

I have a full set of staggs!!! love em!!! Great for recording!!! 8" dh splash(nice splash, played better though), 12" dh hats(not great, too small), 12" dh china(cracked :(), 14" dh crash(lovely), 15" dh crash(my favorite), 15" dh china(quite trashy, good china), and 19" dh crash/ride(not great, but usable. My fault for being a cheap skate. Should have just bought the 20" ride). Overall a really nice set. Things I'd change, hats and ride, for larger cymbals(instead up being a cheap skate).

That's the reason I've only got a china, which I only really use for one sound anyway. My greatest investment cymbal-wise has got to be my Meinhl crash (can't for the life of me remember size or model at the mo), solely because of the range of sounds I can get out of it. It sounds great riding on it, and it's got a bell that's better than that of my ride (which, to be fair, is a really shit Peavey 20" crash/ride).

loool peavey cymbals

The lower end staggs seem to have the one-sound-only syndrome, fair enough they are cheap as hell what did you expect?

The higher end chinas and those little 10 inch high hats kick ass. Gotta make sure you pick a china that bends a little (or a LOT) or you're in for the garbage can sound. I guess some ppls can't tell the difference tho.

I like the 'garbage can sound' for what I use the china for. I can definitely tell the difference, but I've got no use for a higher-end china. I definitely need to get myself a top-end ride, but at the moment my savings are going towards mics and a MOTU 8pre. The ride (and new snare ) will have to wait.
