Open mic gigs could be hard because the smaller the audience.
This might sound dumb, but what is an open mic gig?

I guess a closed mic gig wouldn't make sense since nobody would hear you.

FANGAR,
i don't jerk off but it's my doodle and i can wash it as long and hard as i want.

Well you know what they say. 95% of men in the world masturbate. The other 5% sing in the shower instead. What song do they sing? Yankee Doodle.

Fangar.

downside

An "Open Mic" or "Open stage" is a smalltime opportunity for a bar or coffee house to get free entertainment and an unknown hack to get some stage time. The bar offers up a night where anyone can fill a time slot (usually 15-20 min) and take the stage to perform.

I head out on Monday.

I've done a couple but, not in about 5 years.
Should be fun.

For me the stage fear is never been a real problem (of course you get nervous, have to go for gig shit and the usual), but by listening recorded gigs and whatching videos where I perform I think I'm on my best after drinking 2 bottles of bear not 3 not 4 but 2.:D

my technique.... keep my brain occupied...if you know the songs well enough your body will naturally know what to play, its when you start thinking about what you are playing thatyou tend to make a mistake...

for instance, when you make that morning coffee your brain isn't switched on yet, but the coffee always comes out spot on...go and make your self a cup of coffe now, but think about the way your holding the spoon, exactly how much sugar you should be putting in it, the way you open the milk carton, how much milk your putting in it which way the cup handle is facing, are you stiring clockwise, are you still holding the spoon the right way....

your mind beecomes cluttered and the cat pisses better coffee than that!

what do you normally think of when you make coffee? not making coffee, but when you think about it it comes out crap, same with music, you know how to play those songs, but under pressure you can over think it, so let your mind wander, and before long you'll have finished that first tune, and probably have thought of something interesting to say to the audience.....

good luck

I've never sang Yankee Doodle in the shower.
Fact is, I don't ever remember singing in the shower.
I'm a poor singer.
My hens roost, my bull bellows, my dog howls when I sing.

I sing mentally.

Try that in front of an audience. It's all downhill from there.

Yep that would not be the best for a crowd!

although you know,it depends on the crowd.you could wind up on top of pop.

My current job requires that I do a lot of public speaking. Usually in city council type situations. These meetings are always broadcast live too. I used to get terrible "stage fright" before speaking at one of these. Then I came to the realization, that, "Hey, I know more about this subject matter, than anyone in the room!" I believe that stage fright comes from intimadation, and if you are the authority on the subject matter, then there's no reason to be intimadated. The same holds true when you sing, or perform. You are the foremost authority on your music. No one knows it better than you. Therefore, you shouldn't be intimadated.

I don't even blink when I'm mixing in front of a big crowd. I've been doing this for a living for such a long time, that I don't know any better nowadays.

For a couple of months we (my girlfriend and I) now own a musicschool. Most of the students are little kiddies in the age of 7 to 13. With christmas we had our first performance with these kiddies. They had to play christmas songs for older people in a resthome for like an hour.

Man was I frightened when mixing this stuff. And it were only a couple of guitars, a keyboard, some flutes and some kiddies singin. They really couldn't play very nice yet, but it was a hell of a good and fun performance seeing these kiddies play.

I don't know why but I guess it has to do with being out of the normal situation you are customed to. Offcourse I was very excited about the kiddies playing as well.

Whoa now, wait a minute...

on top of Pop??? Now you're getting into incest.

i was hoping some one would take that coment in a micheal jackson kind of direction but,oh well.here goes.

no one said it had to be your own pop.

Theron,

I think open mic situations can be some of the hardest performances to do, given the fact that the audience is hoping you fall on your ass. But if you don't, and you swim rather than sink, they are generous in their reaction. That's why it's scary. I wouldn't do an open mic or karaoke bar no matter what and I play a minimum of 300 dates a year. Geez, I guess this isn't helping much. Just take a step back and realize that what you or I do doesn't really matter all that much in the scheme of things and have a good time performing.

Let me give you an example of a genuine performance over a talented but contrived one. A few years ago, I helped judge the finals of a karaoke contest at an Indian casino here in the Palm Springs area (never again). It was for something like ten grand and the forty contestants had all won a weekly contest. As the night wore on we given input on who should win and why and all the politics envolved, which we ignored. The 17 year old white girl who was supposed to win (and I've played gigs with her) did not. Classically trained, beautiful, and could do show tunes like few I've ever heard, she chose 'Blue' the LeAnn Rymes song and though good, it was contrived. She ain't country and she didn't place. The 18 year old equally beautiful hispanic girl who was supposed to place second did in fact get third place and was in the money. Who won? An ill dressed older black guy who absoultely nailed an Otis Redding song. It was a matter of the most sincere and heartfelt performance being the best in our minds.

Security had to escort us from the building.

slapping the demon down

O.K.
so I went out and played tonight.
Not my best performance but, I didn't forget the songs or wet myself. After the 4th song I was getting into it then it was time to step off.
Think I'll keep going out and I should be able to play without shaking hands in a few more gigs.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragment. It truely helped.

Theron.

i'm glad you didn't wet yourself :D good luck with future gigs..and well done dude

ohh.. i remember all those times we played gigs in my old band Villa.. I was allways totally nervous and the bass shaked in my hand like i was trying to strangle it the Homer way right before we got up, but i somehow managed to turn that nervousness into agressiveness so i played even better on stage.. doing something particulary evil or extremely funny before a gig is also a good way to get relaxed... or try sex, we do have a little thing called groupies you know?
