Splitter / Mixer - Low volume, do I need a headphone amp or something different?

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice regarding my setup.

I have two desktop computers and a mobile phone plugged into this Four Channel Passive Splitter/Mixer I recently purchased. It works as I hoped it would, it allows me to be able to listen to 3 separate devices from 1 set of headphones. I understand that I'm relying on the actual devices to power the audio through this and I now realise I may have purchased the wrong item for the job.

I think I need a headphone amplifier but I'm not 100% sure and I want to avoid another lottery purchase. I'm hoping someone with experience of dealing with this kind of scenario can tell me exactly what I need.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I think that the main reason why it's not delivering much volume is because it's a passive unit: it's not providing any amplification to any of the signals, only attenuation.

The application that you're describing is pretty much the definition of a mixer. There are entries from all sorts of brand names in the budget small mixer category: Behringer, Yamaha, Alesis, some that I'm forgetting...I'm sure that less than $100 would more than satisfy your need to input multiple sources into a single stereo output.

If you want more volume, yes, you need a headphone amplifier. Something like this.

Could I use this Headphone Amplifier and DAC with the splitter I currently have? Would that work?

Get a proper mixer. It will be better at mixing those sources and it will have a decent headphone amplifier built in.
