Hey guys.

Is there something that can take an audio sample and let me look at the frequencies, kinda like the display in win amp, but better. I need to be able to see which frequenices are lacking in order to eq things to sit in the mix well.

there are pretty decent ones in soundforge, cool edit, wave lab etc... there are some stand alone ones but i'm not sure they are that much better.

It might be nice to check things with a spectrum analyzer, but I'd advise against using it much for your EQ. Our ears don't hear every frequency equally, and how we hear certain frequencies changes with the volume level. Think of it this way: you don't judge visual art with your ears... don't trust your eyes when making music.

That said, you can check out the one at: www.relisoft.com/freq.html

I used the frequency analysis in Wavelab yesterday. I used my Nord Modular to generate white noise, and connected it to my PC. Got a nice flat curve from the analyzer.

Put them through my amps and picked it up with the Oktava. It looked like a downhill slope skiing resort! No wonder my last mix was all treble and no bass! Geez, my monitor system sucks... Well, some heavy fiddling with the 5 band EQ in the amp at least made it look like a rollercoaster instead. And the new mix got out MUCH better.

I need new monitors....
