Okay...I have to pitch these stupid Crate guitar amps I'm using for my Korg Trinity.
But what should I replace them with. What is the difference between powered and unpowered speakers ( monitors? ). If i get unpowered how do I power them? Someone tell me what would be best.

Umpowered speakers require an amp. Powered speakers have the amp built-in and so take line-level signals. The cost of a pair of good powered monitors and the cost of a pair of good passive monitors plus a decent amp is roughly the same.

AlChuck hit it directly on the head.

If you go the unpowered route, then you might want to go to an used audio equipment store or a pawn shop for the acquiesence (sp?) of your amp.

You could probably pick up some Event 20/20 monitors for about $299.00 new.

You could probably buy a good amp from the Trading Times or a similar type of publication for about $70.00.

Hold on a minute!

What is the application? Are you touring or staying put?

Is this for monitoring recordings or practicing your axe?

These are factors that must be addressed before you pick monitors.

:D

Great observation, Krakit. :)

:( I made the assumption that DA would be using these monitors for recording. :(

So, what's up DA? :) How will you be applying these monitors?

Don't buy new

I agree with SPINSTERWUN. Don't buy new whatever you decide; the best place to get speakers is a pawn shop. You can get some really good quality speakers for a very reasonable price. Also, they may be able to give you some good advice as many of the proprietors are musicians themselves.

If you're just wanting to amplify your keyboard, I would go for Roland, used or new.

Speakers: to expound on my question

Thank you all. I have been looking at some Tannoy studio speakers already but they are unpowered. I have to buy an amp but whenever I search for info on amps I usually get POWERED SPEAKERS instead. Have I been misdirected?
These will be used only in a 10 x 20 rectangle room. I wont be movin' em. So...

What say you pros?

Again we ask, what are you "exactly", using them for.

Speakers: to expound on my question further

I will be using them as reference monitors primarily, I suppose, for recording multiple tracks on my Trinity. I want something that will provide ample volume for playback too, so I need something that will provide clean, true sound at reasonably loud volumes. (NOT TOO LOUD, but I like to crank it out a bit.) Keep in mind its only a 10 x 20 foot room - will 50 watts a side be okay? or should I look for 100watt each?

Audix Powerhouse

Guitar Center is currently blowing out Audix monitors.

The PH35 pair is going for $99.99
and the PH5YS is going for $179.99

For your purposes either would work, but get the PH5's if you can afford them.

IMHO, you should get the Event 20/20s.

If you don't have the loot for the Events then you should defintely purchase the monitors Krakit suggested.

Thanks

Alright! Thanks for all your help guys. I'll probably be back!
