I built an iso. cab. because I wasn't happy with DI sound and don't have an isolated room to mic my 4x12 in.I know it won't sound as good as a 4x12 but it is sounding better than DI.I'm looking for eq and mic placement suggestions from someone that has expirience with the Randall type iso. cab.I hope to get a RTA soon so I can see exactly what happens when I put the top on.
Thanks, Grinder

I'm not real fond of that type of isolation box; they tend to suffer from a build up of frequencies in the 500 -1200hz range. That's a function of the dimensions of the box (1-2 feet corresponds to the wavelength of the freqs. I mentioned) and the difficulty in getting enough diffusion/absorption treatment in such a small space. In my experience the bigger the box, the more (or more efficient) acoustic treatment and the less the wattage of the speaker - the better your chances of getting a really good (i.e. sounds just like a miked cab.) guitar sound. FWIW I'd use a dynamic (any of the usual suspects; 57, SM7, RE20, 421, 441) or one of the modern more robust ribbons - as close to the cone as you dare, and slightly off-center.

I've got a similar thread going in the microphone forum and posted some thoughts there. What's an RTA?

Re: Re: Speaker isolation cabinet

It's a real time annalyzer. It shows the frequency spectrum of what ever is plugged into it.That way you could see what frequecy differances occur after you put the top on the isolation cabinet and eq to get the sound closer.
