I was studying about recording room acoustics. Can anyone help me with the following questions?

1) I read that I can reposition my speakers, while playing a commerical music, to find a speaker position with
the most smooth response. Does it mean "smooth frequency response?" What do I actually try to hear while I
reposition the speakers to find this "smooth response?"

2) I read "mounting the speakers on solid stands makes quite a difference, and hi-fi stands that you can fill
with dry sand also work well." Do I have to actually physically “mount” the monitor on a stand, like with
screws?

3) And does anyone know how to make the stand or who sell them?

thanks in advance

1. speaker position equilateral 60 degree triangle

2. i dont think you have to mount them, but placing them towards the front half of the stand is best.

3. search musiciansfriends.com, guitar center has some, you can find em on the net
or
use the search function on the boards, they have a few posts on how to make them

Smooth as in even response across the audio frequqncy range. (Try the REALTRAPS site for a free download of freq. signals & a chart to graph the results on). You'll need a device to measure that response though.
Actually MOUNTING them will make them more stable but will cause probs for rearranging etc etc. the more stable the base & the fixing of the speaker to that base, the less interference from movement, rattling, wobbling or worse.
But then again floor standing speakers give a great response when mounted on spikes.
You have to search for a compromise that suits you.
as for making stands - there'd be as many plans as there are differeing ways to mount.
SEEK & YEA SHALL FIND lot's of stuff some of which may be useful.

Do a search for the DIY thread in the studio building thread, there were a couple posts it here that referenced the PVC stand (with sand inside i think) project.
