SPDIF question.

I got me an Avid 11 Rack. I want to use it as a DI for my GTR & Bass. Connecting it to my Tascam US-1800 via SPDIF cable.

The problem I'm having is my US-1800 isn't seeing the 11 Rack. I have it connected SPDIF out on the rack to in on the 1800. 1 cable. Do I need to make the round trip from the out on the 1800 to the in on the Rack? The Rack is also connected to my computer via USB.

The 1800 is set as the default device on my PC. Though Pro Tools isn't recognizing the 1800, one problem at a time. Or are they related?

I've RTFD, (read the fucking directions) with no help.

It's one thing at a time.

Get the us1800 recognised by Protools and working first, then deal with the I/O later.

• In Protools, go to Setup>playback engine and choose the 1800.
• Then, once done, go to Setup>IO.
• Go to the input tab,
• select all paths,
• delete,
• then hit default.
• Do the same for the output tab.

Now give it a test with a microphone or something, into one of the Tascam's mic preamps.
If that's all good, set up a new stereo track and set the input as S/PDIF. You should get input from your 11 rack now, assuming it supports standalone.



Protools won't 'see' the 11 Rack, as such. It'll just see s/pdif inputs along with all the rest. Whatever you connect via s/pdif is irrelevant, as far as PT is concerned. It's no different to PT not knowing what kind of mic you plugged in, see?

You definitely don't need to make a round trip. It's one-way digital audio.
Why is the rack connected via USB, out of interest. Should it be? Does it need to be connected to operate?
If not I'd lose the USB connection and just go S/PDIF.

I'm tempted to move this to the ProTools section. Do you mind?

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

The Eleven Rack has a Editor Program that works in conjunction with the rack. It allows the user to change parameters via the computer. You can do it on the rack itself with the knobs, but the screen is monochrome, and the color on the computer is much better.

I kind of started asking Q's about this in the ProTools section, but asked the specific question regarding the Tascam.

So you can move it if it's justified.

One another note, I got the Tascam to recogonize the 11 rack in my Sonar X3. So I'm half way there.

Oh, ok. That explains the USB. Well, no sweat. That was probably the least important bit.
Follow those steps I outlined. If the 11 rack supports standalone mode, ie.working purely as converters, then those steps will sort you out.

Really though, the Tascam interface won't 'recognise' the 11 rack.
If you see the words '11 rack' in your recording software, you're doing it wrong.

Oh yeah, many thanks for the info.

Spdif out on the 11 Rack to the spdif in on the US-1800.

When I select a channel on the 1800, I can get a choice of Digital Spdif left, right, or stereo.

I can also use the output to amp to my Carvin V3, and mic the cab, and have the DI (clean or w/effects) via spdif to the DAW.

Right now I'm still experimenting using Sonar X3, and will be diving in to Pro Tools 11 soon, but I did get the routing in Pro Tools to my 1800 working.

Lots to learn.
