Flypaper for freaks
What I would really like is something that accepts 4 spdif inputs and converts to a single ADAT output.

Is there even such a beast?

Thanks in advance!

Mutec in Germany makes them... Z*Sys too, but they are pricey!

I've got an M-Audio SAM that translates one spdif input to all eight ADAT outs: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 mirrored across the board... and will also sum all eight ADAT inputs to the stereo SPDIF out (gain and pan on each ADAT channel)... I don't use it often... but it can be a life saver

but I think they're out of production now...

I do believe that the Alesis AI-1 will do just that. They don't make them any more, but you can find them used on ebay...

I forgot all about the M-Audio S.A.M.!
I do have one for sale if you're interested -- immaculate condition, I think it's been used only 3-4 times!

Thanks, but what I am looking for is something that takes 4 spdif inputs (not 1) and muxes them to adat {1,2}, {3,4}, {5,6}, {7,8} respectively.

Specifically, I have 4 effects units that product spdif output, and I want to be able to generate a single adat stream from those outputs. I need this as I have an available adat input to my board, but I do not have 4 available spdif inputs.

Something like this *should* exist at a reasonable cost :(

The Alesis only supports one SPDIF input and output... It's a bit misleading since their documentation states 4 physical SPDIF connections... 2 RCA (in/out) and 2 Optical (in/out). Optical and RCA connections are shared.

You'll find it a lot easier to locate a unit that takes 8 analog inputs and then outputs to ADAT. So you might want to consider coming out of those fx boxes via their analog connectors instead of SPDIF.

That's what I'm doing now... But I'd like to be able to take advantage of the digital output and avoid the D/A A/D conversion steps altogether :).

Oh well, just might not be workable in the end.

The SAM will mix up to 8 optical channels inputs with panning into a 2 channel S/PDIF signal and vice versa.

That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for!

Where is the best place to get one?

Thanks!

They are no longer available new, but as I said, I do have one for sale.... shoot me an email if you're interested...
