Space Coupler

I'm certainly no expert, and Russ Berger IS. However, I see NO test specs nor info on how they are really used. They are called "space couplers", as if they do something at the boundary between one space and an adjacent/coupled space. Coupled spaces, especially though an open doorway, act as a "spring", which resonates out of phase with the direct sound I believe, or acts as a "capacitor" in electronic terms. But don't quote me on it. Its been a long time since I read about the "effect" it has on the source space. What these do, I can't really understand as they don't really say. Before I would take the design at face value just because they are "Auralux" or Russ Berger designed, I'd do a little research.

In regards to those "sculpted" foam absorbers shown on the same page, heres another little piece of information too. This was told to me from a european acoustician. As far as the "sculpted" foam is concerned, when you remove material from a "resistance" absorber, what you really do is take away areas that already had a thickness which had a maximum bandwidth of absorption. Remove material, and you make it "thinner" in the sculpted areas, which means those areas that are removed, now have less "depth", which translates into shorter 1/4 WAVELENGTHS being absorbed in those areas. It amounts to the total absorption in Sabines being less per square foot/frequency. Although it may ADD absorption through DIFFRACTION in those areas, but I don't really know.

Look at it this way. Auralux makes a "pyramid" absorber I believe, which the "pyramids" have a maximum thickness at the prodruding "points". When you look at these, you can see that actually, over HALF of the material has been removed. This may add absorption at grazing angles, but it only has absorption of the MAXIMUM 1/4wavelength depth at the POINTS.  Seeing as how most small HR studios are in dire need of low frequency absorption, it would seem to defeat the purpose. However, this is just my viewpoint, and my disclaimer is in full force. :p
