Does anyone know if the SP B1 and the Behringer B1 are actually the same mic?

Thanks,

NO. :D

The only thing they have in common is the nomenclature. The Studio Projects B1 is in a different class from the Behringer, although they are both at entry level pricing.

Treeline:

Thanks for the peply. I gather from your tone that you consider the SP B1 to be superior---correct?

Do you own one or the other, or both?

Have you actually compared these mics side-by-side?

Thanks for the input,

Although I ave never compared the Behringer B1 to the SP B1 in a direct shootout, I can tell from what has been said on this board that the SP B1 is a far far superior mic compared to the Behringer.

I own a SP B1 (as with many on this board) and have not had any trouble with it as yet and have read very little criticism. However, the Behringer B1 has recieved only criticism from what I've read.

Have never heard the SP mic, but I did try the Behringer. It has a hyped high end, and can be almost harsh sounding. No one here has decribed the SP B1 in those terms. There's better than the Behringer to be had in that price range.

All:

Thanks for the info---very useful so far.

I think that I owe you all an apology---after more online research, I don't even understand how I confused the two. I thought they had identical casing, windscreen, spec, etc., and that is not the case. I don't know how I did this to myself. Maybe it's time for a nap!

Sorry, and Thanks,

If you check out www.listeningsessions.com you can compare these mics side by side.
I gotta tell you, in my opinion, the Behringer was the flat out winner as the worst microphone in this shoot out. It just sound totally different than all the other mics. You'd think they were micing a different guitar.

I own the Behringer B1 (it was a gift) and I'm not real happy with it. It's better for vocals than my SM58 through a crappy preamp, but it does have a pretty hyped top end. I haven't used it too much and I haven't compared it to anything except the 58/57. The last time I recorded with it, I got a really gritty transistor radio tone out of it. I kinda don't think this is what any condensor is supposed to sound like. Maybe it's broken, or maybe I just screwed up something else in the chain. Maybe my voice sounds that grainy.

I will say I did use this mic once on acoustic guitar, and it didn't sound too bad at the time. I have a sneaking suspicion that with my newer MXL603s I'd get a much better sound.

Anyway, I would not recommend this mic. YMMV of course.

I have a couple of Studio Project B1s and use them for all kinds of stuff. I love these mics because they are pretty easy to "learn" and are predictable. They seem pretty neutral and have good useable signal rejection from the rear; I can use them as live mics without creating a disaster.

The same can be said for a number of $200 or $300 mics. But the B1s are $80. That's what is remarkable - they perform out of their price range and bring decent sound to the guys who record in their study.

The berry is bright yes, grainy etc. NO

But there again what monitoring equipment have been used with these Mics.

THAT IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE MIC

If someone is going to tell me how good a mic is I want to know what they are monitoring it with.

A Neumann will sound shit through a pair of PC speakers.

In my opinion you are wrong. A Mic that totally outclasses the Berry would be as close to as good as you could get at any money and that is not the SP B1.

I have both of these mics here for review. The Studio Projects B1 is great, and I highly recommend it all the time. The Behringer B-1 is not so great. I do recommend certain Behringer products often, but their B-1 is not one of them. I told my contact at Behringer that I thought the mic sucked and wouldn't be reviewing it. He was cool with that.

You sometimes wonder why so many gear reviews are so often positive. In my case, it's not worth wasting time reviewing something you're not stoked about.

All:

Thanks for the additional info. I think that my confusion was caused by the similar appearances of the Behringer and a certain MXL mic and the similar nomenclatures of the SP and the Behringer. I AM sure that explaining my confusion will only lead to more confusion.

Thanks to all for your help,
Paj
