i know what you mean with listening before finishing but mastering before finishing is silly. i bounce a track of a mix then listen to it in my car go back and mix again if i am unhappy. only when i am happy with the mix will i attempt to master. with the whole tinniness i would listen through headphones every now and then if your room isnt helping. even if the headphones are your crappy i pod ones as even those will show you a crap sound.
