WOW....I have now heard what a killer mic SOUNDS like now...
my friend borrowed an Elux 251 from a major studio.
I think these things are like $4,000 and sound like $4000

Man, we put this thing on Omni and just grabbed a guitar and mandolin and started jammin - It sounded like.......like hot butter on a warm biscuit

here they are:

The Elux is a modern re-issue of the Telefunken Elam-251. $20000 to $40000 microphones. They make some dandies.

I have the now discontinued U97, which cost around $600. Not as nice as the 251, but I sure like it. Soundelux makes some great stuff, I'd like to see more people discussing them here!

I'll trade you my U97 for your 251 :)

I just got a U95s last week. I haven't had a chance to test the one I have but when I went to AES I compared it to the E47 which replaced it and preffered it to that (U95s has a more natural sounding top end to me) The E47 sounded more like the neumann 149 but the E47 soundes better to my ears.

etherize, you have deep pockets my friend. That is one seriously nice mic.

Yeah, I was running it through my little joe meek MQ3 and then into the Audiophile 24/96 recording in Vegas

I have a Soundelux ELUX 251, and it is definitely a fantastic mic. I run it through my Groove Tubes Vipre mic pre and the sound sits perfectly in the mix. It is a lethal combination. I will eventually pick up an E47 as well. Other than Brauner, Soundelux blows every other mic manufacturer out of the water right now.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the Lawson 251 knock-off with the Soundeluxe version? I think it is priced somewhat lower, if i recall. But I haven't heard either.

I can say Lawson did a great job with the L47mp.

Last week I purchased the u195 and it sounds great. The jump in quality from the tlm-103 is easily recognizable.
I've got a rough demo with no eq or compression on www.nowhereradio.com/mysterium

the song is called " I fell for you"

I haven't got around to including the vox yet but you can hear the u195 on acoustic and electric. Interestingly, the preamp is nothing more than a tascam 4 track and a rolls phantom power;)

I too have the discontinued U97 - which is a wonderful thing (ironically I bought it new at 'Nashville USED music')

It's funny though, not many know about the name (among other home-reccers I know, so I always say it's sort of like a C414, only warmer/better.

Is that an accurate comparison - more or less? People seem to get the point, so I let it go.

Hopefully I can add more mics to the arsenal, but that little beauty is a fine start!
