i have an echo mia midi soundcard, and an altec lansing 5.1 system hooked up (i know, i need monitors, one day the money will come for those i hope  ) anyways, the altecs worked on my old soundblaster card, but i'm getting a horrible popping noise when i plug them into the echo mia.

the jacks on the altecs are mini (theres three of them for some reason) the inputs on the mia are 1/4" so i had to use two adapters to plug them in (theres only two inputs, so can't plug all three cables in)...i tried plugging them in with every combination, but cant' get it to work. if i let the cables hang out a little bit, i don't get the clipping and popping, but a stronger background hiss, and thats how i've been working lately because unfortunately thats my best option...i'll be very appreciative if anyone can stear me in the right direction on what to do to solve this problem...thank you.

I don't own either pieces of equipment so take my advice for what it's worth, but the speakers should be plugged into the output of your soundcard. The nominal output level is configurable within the bundled software and is adjustable from +4dBu or -10dBV. Also, plug everything in while the computer is off, then turn it on. Other people might chime in to tell you to get some monitors(speakers) that are more appropriate so I won't do that now.

thanks for the reply...sorry i phrased my question wrong...i actually do have them in the outputs (duh! or i wouldn't have sound at all)...sorry about that...i wrote my little monitor blurb for that reason just so ppl dont' say taht...because obviously theyd be preferable, but for now, this is what i have to work with.

(also have a Mia)

Sounds as if you have cheap adapters. Something is bending and causing the pops and static from an intermittent connection.

That's not the soundcard's fault.

Try getting extention cables with 1/4" on the Mia end and mini on the OTHER end so that there is no strain on the jacks or the adapters. That should solve it.....

thanks for the reply, i'll definatly try that since the speakers worked fine b4 hand and i'm almost positive the soundcard isn't defective
