the learning curve is slow, but nonetheless...
first question(s): what is the difference between a regular soundcard and a card such as a gina card? is the gina card a "soundcard" or is it simply a card that allows you to record audio to your hard drive?
second question: if the gina card is not a "sound card", what is a good card to get for around $200.00. I currently have SB AWE64 which i'm suspecting is not very good.
thank you

7) thank you

1) That is okay, be patient, you will learn. :)

2) A/D D/A conversion, amount of inputs and outputs.

3) Yes.

3b) Yes, also.

4) It is a soundcard. ;)

5) Look into the M-Audio soundcards. For instance, the Delta 44 or Delta 66. http://www.midiman.net

6) You are correct. :D

7) You're welcome.

peace....

Howdy neighbor. The Spinster has you dialed in.

thanks spinster...
here's the deal, i have the old gina 20 bit card with the 2 inputs/8 outputs deal (i don't understand that either), but i was wondering if i needed to have another seperate soundcard at all or just upgrade that standard SB AWE that came with my pc? Are the Delta cards better that the gina? could i work without the SB card? I have Logic Silver 4.8.1 that i'm using primarily to just record audio. I've noticed a lot of noise in my recordings and latency problems when recording. Could this be due to the gina, SB AWE, or both?
thanks again for any help!

2 inputs / 8 outputs = you can feed 2 signal separated signal (usualy LR) into the PC simultanously, and routing the PC's output signal to 8 different outlets.

Upgrade the SB AWE. Replace it.

Are the Delta cards better that the Gina? It's very subjective. Each has it pros and cons. None can say one is better than another. But they are certainly alot better than your SB AWE, in sound & music working capabilities.

Yes, you could work without the SB card. Better yet.

I've noticed a lot of noise in my recordings and latency problems when recording. Could this be due to the gina, SB AWE, or both? Colud be... But noises commonly comes from unappropriate setting. Muting Mic in & CD Audio in your SB's kernel mixer could reduce noises for example. Keep in mind to mute unneccesary audio source while redording to get lowest noises. Also check your PC's fans, power suply, wiring, etc. Latency ? Commonly caused by programs/hardwares that eat much PC resource. Make sure to minimize background programs running. What's your spec anyway ? There's many thread in this forum talking about how to solve latency... keep looking for it.
