Hi there, my first post here.

What i'm trying to find out is - if i get a mixer with a usb output (e.g the peavey pv 14 usb) or some sort of other multi input audio interface, is the need for a good soundcard negated? I would have thought that the onboard soundcard wouldnt really be involved however perhaps im wrong?

Yeah.

A USB mixer functions as a soundcard for your system --- you still need to disconnect the factory soundcard though.

Welcome to the board.

:D

thanks a lot - i suspected as much.

In terms of disconnecting the soundcard - is this neccessary or just a good idea to save resources?

Necessary.

Simply stated, there are only so many memory pegs in a system and if you try to hang both a USB mixer and the factory soundcard on the same peg you will get conflicts.

.

ssscientist got it right on! I mean two soundcards in one system will definitely run...but will not be friendly.
