Soundcard and Monitor suggestions

Hi there,

I'm interested in electronic music composition, but I also like recording some guitar and vocals now and again.

At the moment I work only using my WinXP PC via Logic Platinum, MAX/MSP and Reaktor.

But I'm now planning on buying a new PC and getting some recording equipment also. I've worked before with PC speakers which are reasonably good, but I also had access to a post production room which had monitors in 5.1 configuration.

With regard to a PC, I'm thinking of getting a machine with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Processor (1.86GHz, 1066MHz, 2MB), with 2048MB and 320GB hard drive. I'll also get a Firewire port if I need one.

I'd like to get WinXP SP2 on this machine rather than Vista. Have you guys any opinions on this? I'm just worried about the OS hogging too much memory. I'd also like to partition my HD and install debian linux (DeMuDi). I'm interested in using Rosegarden and PD on this platform.

With regard to other equipment, I'm thinking of getting -

A soundcard with 2 analog ins with Pres and phantom power.
6 analog outs.
2 monitors with the option of adding a further 2 and sub woofer - for surround sound compositions.
MIDI IN Port(s) (but can wait with theses... )

My budget for the above audio equipment is somewhere around the 1000 dollar mark, but I can wait a little longer with some items if it is worth paying more for them.

Can you suggest what items I should research for my particular application, in terms of sound cards and monitors?

Thanks very much for your help,

Steve.

hey steve

i recently got a dell computer with an AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 3800+, 2.00ghz and 2 gb ram. its lovely i might add. and 120 gb hardrive (more than enough for the moment).

using windows xp service pack 2. dont get vista yet. wait, in my opinion, AT LEAST 6 more months till there are a lot more drivers updated for it.

and i would recommend maybe an m-audio firewire 410. it has 2 analogue ins with preamps. and i think 6 or 8 outs.
i'd search around a bit more for this though. i have the firewire 1814, and am very happy. my girlfriend has the 410, but i cant speak for her yet.

but most importantly, i would recommend 2 gb ram, and windows xp, not vista.
