In addition to the previous messages citing the recording equipment we have and the information on the computer we will have. We will be using Sound Forge 6.0. All put together - is this a good program to start with?

If you want to do mono or stereo editing, yes.

If you want to do multi-track recording, no. It is only a stereo editor.

Damn fine program otherwise.

Can you recommend a program that will also do multi-track recording?

CubaseSE is only $99 and an excellent choice.

N-Track Studio ( www.ntrack.com ) is <$70 and also great.

If you want to do a lot of MIDI, go with Cubase it has better tools for MIDI but both CubaseSE and N-Track will do great with audio. I use both.

Go to www.hitsquad.com .... they have a "Multitrack Sequencer" section with listings of multitrack programs. There are links to numerous demos, including demos of Cubase and Sonar.

Also immediately go to this link, spend $15 before you waste hundreds or thousands on setting up your studio and get this good basic book on recording:
