I'm just about to crack open my computer to install my Aardvark Q10 and...well... what do I do with the ol' soundblaster? Sorry if this is a stupid question but do I toss it? Does it still need to be in there for the more mundane audio tasks like letting me know I've got mail?

Just leave it there, as long as it doesn't have any driver conflict it is fine. You can use that to play games and jukebox.

Rip the SB out! You'll save yourself tons of problems...

I think old and new Soundblasters should be smashed with a hammer and thrown in the Atlantic... :D

I kept my sblive in with my 24-bit soundcard. Use it for a inboard MIDI synth.

Yeah, It done me good for three years, I can't be that mean to it. Hey, how dow you quote a post all fancy like that?

yeah, creative makes decent cards... and it only took me booting up windows once with my motu 2408 with 5 hr-624s (on the main outs) as my primary soundcard to promptly put the audigy back in the machine.

You just don't want your shiny pro audio card playing windows noises. And if you can, keep some cheap multimedia speakers hooked into your old soundcard to... please, learn from my burning ears :)

Seriously though, while it is useful if your machine is serving two masters (ie email et. al / pro-audio) to have the SB in there, if you can possibly have a dedicated studio system... then do that, and visit: http://www.musicxp.net/

And save the card for when you're building your wife/mom/brother etc... a computer.

life only gets better from here.

Good luck.

Take it out and stick it in a junk box. Disable all your windows sounds and do not use your studio computer/multitrack for playing video games on.
