Hi.
I need help on a project of mine. It's the bass. It's not defined enough. It's just ends up being... well, bass!
I recorded, sang and mixed it all myself. It's recorded through my small setup in my apartment made for capturing ideas when I'm not in the studio.

The chain is ; Fender Jazz Bass> Behinger 2 ch. mix> m-audio audiophile 2496> cubase> waves Req (lowcut @45 Hz - 3db+ @3 kHz)> Kjaerhus Audio GKO comp.

It's the tune called Whenever

I'm not sure what the problem is.. indeed tha bass playing lacks a bit 'attack' if you ask me, but this is one of those things that hardly can be fixed in the mix.. I think.. further you can look for the frequencies that are present in the bass that you want to be more 'there' and try to dip a bit on that (those) frequencies on the other tracks that might 'push the bass to the background'.. Maybe it is an idea to record the strings beeing played with a condensor mic to be able to add a bit attack in the mix afterwards?

I'm stoopid, so don't think I know where I'm talking about.. just ideas..

I would say the Behringer is the issue. You need a better preamp than the one you have so that the bass is captured better. Also, when you DI a bass like you have., you generally need to bump the low midrange because DI just doesn't do it justice.

Thanx for your input guys!

Turns out the solutions was a better preamp. Borrowed the studios ISA 220 and redid the bass tracks...
Now it fits like O.J. hands in a glove....
