gimmi your mic!
hi guys & girls --

I was wondering: what's the best <$300 mic?

Just kidding. :p
If I read the numerous articles about high-end mics in recent issues of recording mags or in discussion on this board, people talk about the Telefunken, Neumann, Lawson, and other "stratospheric" mics all the time.

However, if I watch documentaries on tv music channels, I see the Sony C800 on the mic stand all the time. With a price tag of almost 6 grands, I am sure it is a hell of a mic.

So how come people rarely talk about this mic, even though it seems to be used very frequently? Are people ashamed of a "Sony" logo in their studios? Surely, Sony doesn't come with the myth of a Neumann or Telefunken. However, if people are willing to spend a few thousand dollars and use the C800 they must have a heck a lot to say about this mic. Or is it just a piece of gear & machinery for them.

Any thoughts? Does anyone of you own one by any chance?

i know a few ppl with Sony C800G's.. yea they go from$5300-6000 each.. its probably the best tube mic i've ever heard.. with the Blue bottle comming in close to it..

its a great mic but no to many ppl can afford it.. i know i set a budget to never go over $2600 for a mic..

thats actually the main vocal mic BadBoy records uses...

yeah right, I saw it in the BadBoy and in the Hit Factory studios on tv a few days ago.

Isn't a spending cap of $2,600 silly? Mine is $2,599.- :D

I'm pretty sure it's a marshall of some sort. If you are really interested I can find out for you.

It was mixed by Ken Lewis. His credits are pretty impressive. http://www.protoolsmixing.com is his site. He is the (ugh) self-proclaimed protools master.
