Just got back from a few local music shops....There are two sides to the story... Some say, that Sonic maximizing makes your mixes sound magically better....
Then others say, "If you need a SM, you aren't mixing as good as can be"........ What does everyone here think.....I don't have one and I'm told my mixes are great, and I am at peace with them..... Is BBE a good brand....... (Im still in the middle of both opinions, and need input)

Hey VxV....

I personally tend towards purism and avoid maximizers... if the track ain't happenin' going down to tape, it ain't happenin' period and no amount of "magic sauce" will fix it properly....

It's a tool, sometimes useful in salvaging tracks that you have no other choice with, but I wouldn't use it as a matter of course.

On the other hand, there are no rules - if it sounds good, it IS good...

My 2 cents! (other's mileage WILL vary!!!) ;)

Bruce, yeah im in the same school of thought:)just that guy at the store that was pushing the unit, was so damn convincing, I just had to hear the vibe here.... (He also spilled his f*ckin' coffee on my sho while trying to marry me to this piece of equipment):(

Hey Vox
The maximiser purports to "time allign" the signal to account for the difference between the distance to the tweeter vs the woofer. They say this misallignment of two signal arriving slightly out of sync can be "tightened" by their process.
Well,it does make a pa feedback faster when used live.I can verify that from experience. But I can't say it does what they say because it didn't have the psycho-acoustic effect on me (your mileage may vary)that they claim. My band retired the sonic maximiser after about a 6 month run.Caveat emptor bud.

I've had a BBE 386 for quite a while - I became dependant on it as part of my stereo mixdown chain - it did seem to add life to the mix - but the more I read (including information from certain people at this site that I respected) I started to pull the maximizer out of the chain and worked harder to "get it right" without the BBE.

Now I choose not to use the BBE for mixdown (one more connection out of the chain). But I would never say never.

However, I do like to use it when tracking individual instruments - in particular it can do a lot for guitar sounds and certain keyboard sounds.
