Sonic Maximizer?

what exactly does the bbe sonic miximizer do (i'm looking at the 362)?

does anyone know how it works? should it be ran through an fx loop, and applied during mixdown?

if someone has experience with one of these, please fill me in.

Before you get a response here regurgitating what BBE says they do, you might want to do a quick search on rec.audio.pro. As I recall, there are some posts that are pretty informative.

On the other hand, I don't have one and have never used one, so what do I know?
 
I have one of its lesser brothers (a 262?).
The best use for me has been on cassette sources like a
cassette multi-track and/or making cassette demos in order to have more clarity. Live bands have also reported they can be handy to compensate for a second rate sound system.
Generally, a given degree of its processing will sound good to you,
then as your ears get more acclimated you'll want to back it off to
avoid harshness.

I'll second chessparov on this. I've mostly used my BBE on cassette mastering from 4 track. It seems to work for "un-dulling" a tape master. I keep it in the rack (mostly to fill space)and patch bay and occasionally use it to brighten up a dull synth or guitar sound. I use it inline as any dynamic processor. So inserts or FX loops are a good place to try a channel. You will find that the low contour is just low boost/cut of the effect. What exactly it does is anybodys guess, I've heard some silly sounding things.
 
Had I been inclined to give a straight-faced answer, I would have said roughly what chessparov said.

But since I'm me, what it does is bamboozle the ill-informed with marketing BS, and what it should be run through is eBay, or a donkey's intestines. Unless of course you want to carry on sticking bandaids on arterial spray such as portastudios and crummy garage band PA's.

I have one of the old mono models.

I use it to improve the sound of my J station,works pretty well.
I patch the J station into a mono channel on my Mackie,out to the BBE,into the recorder.
Really fills the sound out.

So you've had one?
 
I own a BBE 862. I think the hi end sounds harsh and artificial so I never use it but the low end can add some nice low frequency girth to the PA I use it on. What is your intended use? I would never use it for recording.
